The British Security Industry Association’s (BSIA’s) flagship event, the British Security Awards, returned to the live stage for the first time since July 2019 to recognise security officers and businesses working to keep people, property, and places professionally protected during the last 18 months. 25th BSIA awards In an emotional return to the live arena in its 25th year, the British Security Awards, held at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square in front of a sold-out audience, celebrated security excellence with 16 awards presented to security officers and businesses in front of clients and leading industry stakeholders. The show also featured the Chairman’s Award as well as the SaferCash Bravery Award, which recognised three members of the public for their courage in an armed robbery, and the Police Partnership Initiative Award, which recognised valuable work in reducing ATM crime. BSIA award winners The awards were presented by BAFTA-nominated journalist Sam McAlister with the SaferCash awards being presented by Assistant Chief Constable of the West Midlands Police, Jayne Meir. The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) proudly sponsored the Apprentice of the Year Award at the British Security Awards 2020 which took place on 1st July. The annual event, recognising individuals and companies within the private security sector for their talent and commitment in protecting people and property, saw a significant number of NSI approved companies celebrated amongst its winners. Organised by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), this year’s British Security Awards were streamed online for the first time in its history, due to the Coronavirus pandemic and featured special guests including Ian Todd, Chief Executive of the Security Industry Authority and Rick Mounfield CSyP FSyl, Chief Executive of the Security Institute. Nearly 200 representatives from across the sector watched the event ‘live’ on the BSIA’s YouTube channel. Front line key workers NSI congratulates all of the winners and finalists including those NSI approved companies Industry figureheads announced each award including Dame Cressida Dick, DBE QPM, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service who praised the wider security industry and highlighted the invaluable contribution of front line key workers throughout the pandemic. The National Security Inspectorate (NSI), the UK’s independent certification body specialising in the security and fire safety sectors, shared in the success of this year’s IFSEC and FIREX exhibitions as the integrated events proved important forums for approved companies and applicants, as well as key industry stakeholders, to engage face-to-face with NSI experts. The three-day events provided a vital opportunity to raise awareness of the valuable role of independent certification in enhancing the performance and operational effectiveness across the sectors. NSI’s continued support for the Show Me How feature was evident with a series of sessions on the NSI stand. The topics included updates on PD 6662 for the installation of alarm systems, the new Kitchen Fire Protection Systems scheme (SP206), NSI’s CCTV Code of Practice NCP104 and the latest modifications to the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme workbook. Importance of using trained risk assessors NSI Chief Executive Richard Jenkins presented the heat winners’ prizes at the end of the final day in the Keynote ArenaNSI’s Head of Field Operations (Systems), John Davidson spoke at FIREX to a packed theatre on the importance of using competent, trained risk assessors to complete life safety fire risk assessments. Once again, NSI auditors judged the work of teams competing in the Engineers of Tomorrow Competition, a key attraction within IFSEC International. This year the competition not only showcased the skills and talent of apprentices, but laid the foundations for becoming a part of the highly respected World Skills competition. NSI Chief Executive Richard Jenkins presented the heat winners’ prizes at the end of the final day in the Keynote Arena. The heat winners on day three were Matt Eminson and Ryan Harker from Chubb (Intruder Alarm competition) and Callum Tootle and Chris Lomax from EFT Systems (Fire competition).
