Checkpoint Systems acquires Alert Systems to strengthen its portfolio of solutions to combat organised retail crime

Checkpoint Systems, a global pioneer in RFID and RF technology solutions, has acquired Denmark-based Alert Systems, a pioneering Internet of Things (IoT) specialist with a focus on metal and magnet detection in the retail environment.  Since 1999, Alert Systems has supplied the global retail industry with solutions to identify tools and techniques used by criminals to steal items from stores – these include booster bags (handmade containers lined with foil used to shoplift) and detachers (illegal magnets used to detach tags with ease), commonly detected at store entrance/exits and fitting room areas. Checkpoint Systems and Alert Systems partnership For a number of years, Checkpoint has been a partner and major distributor for the company For a number of years, Checkpoint has been a partner and major distributor for the company, to provide ground-breaking metal and magnet detection products, including Hyperguard, Metalguard, and Apparelguard – a revolutionary batch of digital software-driven solutions, which work against professional shoplifters using booster bags and detachers to steal items in hypermarkets, fashion stores, pharmacies and other retail stores.  The success of the partnership has now followed a natural progression to the full acquisition, further strengthening Checkpoint’s core focus, which is offering world-class loss prevention solutions and bolstering its product line. Organised retail crime (ORC) rising globally Ben Lilienthal, President - Checkpoint Worldwide said, “Organised retail crime (ORC) is increasing globally; in the US alone retailers saw a 26.5% increase in incidents in 2021 and shrinkage represented nearly $100 billion in losses in 2022. This is due to criminals using increasingly advanced methods of avoiding detection, some of which can defeat traditional EAS anti-theft solutions." He adds, "These include foil-lined containers or booster bags which shield the security tag from the EAS system thus allowing stolen items to leave a store without triggering an alarm. By providing retailers with more information regarding when and where organised retail crime (ORC) threats are entering a store, our new solutions will help retailers drive down the ever-increasing prevalence of gang-related crime." Acquisition of Alert Systems Ben Lilienthal continues, “Checkpoint has long been known for its expertise in the retail security space and we are looking forward to providing our retail customers around the world with an even stronger loss prevention offering that will cater to their every retail security need.” Checkpoint has long been known for its expertise in the retail security space" Troels Garibaldi Falkenberg, CEO of Alert Systems, said: “Checkpoint Systems’ acquisition of Alert Systems is the logical next step in our shared mission to tackle retail crime. AlertSystems stresses on the need for sufficient security to avoid damage during an arson attack

When a fire of this magnitude occurs, authorities already have an uphill battle when it comes to determining the cause The reaction comes following a report in the Black Country-based Express and Star, detailing a fire that destroyed an industrial estate in the region late last year, with evidence from local authorities confirming that the blaze was started deliberately. The fire at Middlemore Industrial Estate, situated in the town of Smethwick in the West Midlands, occurred throughout the early hours of December 3rd and continued for several days as fire fighters struggled to control it spreading. Over 70 fire staff were called into action over the period, putting a huge stretch on the area’s resources. The West Midlands Fire Service has now released a statement, saying that “the fire was started intentionally”, confirming the suspicions of the local business community. Many of the companies operating on the site have suffered serious losses in terms of stock damage. A director from Tiger Stationary, Andy Mackay, has said that the fire has destroyed everything on their property, which he states was “fully stocked in preparation for Christmas”. Authorities are finding it difficult to locate the culprit due to the lack of CCTV security or adequate fire prevention systems in place. A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in security implementation, has released a statement following the report. “When a fire of this magnitude occurs, authorities already have an uphill battle when it comes to determining the cause. “The fact that it has been confirmed as an arson attack makes it all the more difficult for those businesses that have been affected to stomach – something that is no doubt amplified by the fact there was no security system in place on or around the industrial estate. With companies losing high percentages of their stock and in some cases having to relocate their offices and warehouses completely, it is imperative that the right measures are taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again. “Furthermore, this should act as a wake-up call to proprietors of premises such as the Middlemore Industrial Estate to take the appropriate measures in protecting their staff, stock and property.” AlertSystems manage and maintain thousands of commercial security installations throughout the UK and are specialists in providing business security solutions.
