Traka UK has installed a bespoke key management system at London Underground to ensure the safekeeping and accountability of service vehicle and tool keys at all times. The world famous public transport system called upon the services of Traka after an intense search to establish a key management solution, and help ensure a smooth running service, for the benefit of staff and passengers.

Intelligent key cabinets installed

Traka installed intelligent key cabinets that automate the key issuing process and manages the receipt of keys back into the system; whilst ensuring only authorised personnel can gain access, and only then to designated keys. The specialist software also offers full audit control capability for all key transactions without the need for a dedicated member of staff 24/7 manually issuing and recording them.

Says Phil McCusker, Signals Maintenance Manager – North Signals for London Underground: “The Underground is over 150 years old and has 1.265 billion passengers a year, who are reliant on the efficient running of the service to travel across the capital.  It is our duty to make sure we have the systems in place so that this can occur to the best of our ability.

"The positivity of the Traka team in helping us to install the right solution to suit our individual requirements has also been a welcome bonus"

“When it came to key management, we did our research and Traka proved to be the most intuitive.  It saves the team valuable time and resource in our key access processes, and we can see live transactions via the software reporting function. The positivity of the Traka team in helping us to install the right solution to suit our individual requirements has also been a welcome bonus and the reason we are looking to expand our use of Traka solutions across London Underground Network.”

Decrease downtime, increase work efficiency

Traka’s key management solutions for transport are designed to decrease downtime and improve work efficiencies through automating key management. The ability to further add control to key access is also coupled with compliance to health and safety standards as the element of human error is minimised.

Ben Farrar, Traka Marketing Development Manager added: “We are naturally delighted to be associated with London Underground as such a famous institution, where inevitably key and equipment management is so critical to the smooth running of the underground network.

“We worked closely with the signal maintenance team, tailoring the system to London Underground’s requirements, allowing 24/7 access to response vehicles with no need for dedicated staff issuing keys. We provided instant access to manage who has which keys, when and for how long. Traka has ensured all vehicle keys at London Underground remain accounted for at all times.”
