Smarter Security, the intelligent entrance controls company, has announced new optical technology that reduces the risk of “sidegating” when two people attempt unauthorised side-by-side entry through a turnstile.
Layered security strategy
Jeff Brown, Chief Executive Officer at Smarter Security, says “Security teams must approach insider threats and collusion with a layered security strategy that starts at the front lobby. This innovative optical turnstile technology available in the Fastlane Glassgate 155 is the first of its kind to identify and alert when sidegating is occurring”
Sidegating is a growing security issue as changing regulations and customer demands for increased pedestrian and wheelchair user comfort dictate the need for wider turnstiles. If a lane is wide enough to comfortably fit a wheelchair, it is also wide enough to fit two pedestrians side-by-side. Until now, turnstiles have been unable to detect this kind of behavior, which leads to increased risk for unauthorised access and security breaches.

Intelligent infrared matrix powered by neural network algorithms senses who or what is going through
Smarter Security’s Fastlane Glassgate 155 turnstiles feature new optical technology to prevent sidegating from happening. An intelligent infrared matrix powered by neural network algorithms senses who or what is going through the turnstile in real time and makes thousands of calculations per second to determine if entry should be authorised. The system can distinguish between people and objects to minimise nuisance alarms, and process unsurpassed throughputs of up to one person per second.
“Security teams must approach insider threats and collusion with a layered security strategy that starts at the front lobby. This innovative optical turnstile technology available in the Fastlane Glassgate 155 is the first of its kind to identify and alert when sidegating is occurring,” said Jeff Brown, CEO of Smarter Security. “Our customers who need those wider lanes also need to have the confidence that only authorised people are coming into the building. This breakthrough reinforces how far ahead Fastlane technology is, and why it has been number one for much of the past decade.”
Intelligent optical turnstiles, speed gates
Smarter Security’s Fastlane brand of intelligent optical turnstiles and speed gates are favored by end users for their superior return on investment, and by architects for combining depth of functionality with extensive customisation options. The turnstiles are installed in thousands of iconic building lobbies, government buildings, corporate campuses and universities around the world.
