NordVPN, a cybersecurity company, released its app for Surface Pro and other Windows devices built on ARM architecture.

With this step, NordVPN becomes one of the first VPN providers to release a native VPN application built for ARM-based Windows devices.

New NordVPN app

The new NordVPN app for Windows runs on ARM architecture specifically for ARM64 devices to complement the existing app for x64 devices.

For a smooth VPN experience, NordVPN chose to develop the app as a native ARM build instead of building an emulated app.

ARM-native NordVPN application

The app used in its native implementation follows the logic and instruction set of that particular processor’s architecture. The app speaks the ‘language’ of the processor, and they can operate smoothly together,” says Marijus Briedis, CTO at NordVPN.

"Our decision to develop an ARM-native NordVPN application has been based on several advantages against ARM emulation. This includes quicker response to prompts, seamless execution of all commands, and stronger application security."

Excellent performance

At this initial stage, the NordVPN app for Windows ARM does not include the Threat Protection Pro feature

NordVPN encrypts the user’s traffic and changes the IP address. As the app follows the same instructions set as the ARM architecture on Windows, it can offer excellent performance.

At this initial stage, the NordVPN app for Windows ARM does not include the Threat Protection Pro feature, but developers are working to deliver it to ARM users as soon as possible.

Flexibility

The need to develop a native NordVPN application arose after Microsoft adapted Windows to work on ARM devices, including laptops, tablets, and two-in-one devices like Surface Pro.

These are typically lightweight, portable computers ideal for people who are always on the go. ARM processors offer longer battery life, providing more flexibility, and users can stop worrying about charging stations for an extended period.
