IdenTrust, part of HID Global - a provider of secure identity solutions, announced it is a participant in the new DirectTrust Partnership for Patients Program (P4PP) that aims to make it easier for patients and healthcare consumers to securely share personal health information with medical professionals at hospitals, offices, clinics, and other locations via secure email.

IdenTrust digital certificates are an integral component of the programme, which leverages a secure, identity-assured email network to remove the cost barriers and complexity that can make it difficult for patients and consumers to confidently engage in two-way digital communication with their care providers.

Secure health information exchange

DirectTrust is a collaborative, non-profit alliance of more than 150 health IT and healthcare provider organisations that have joined forces to support secure, interoperable health information exchange via the Direct message protocols. IdenTrust digital certificates provide the necessary identity proofing with EHNAC-DirectTrust accredited healthcare information service providers to ensure the security and privacy of the communications within the Partnership for Patients Program.

“There is a growing demand by patients and consumers to be able to access their health information and communicate with their healthcare provider electronically, without fear that their privacy is being compromised," said DirectTrust President and CEO David C. Kibbe, MD, MBA. "IdenTrust, as a member of DirectTrust and participant in the Partnership for Patients Program, provides digital certificates which add trust to communications containing sensitive personal information, making it possible for patients to share healthcare information with both ease and the confidence that their privacy is protected.”

DirectTrust Partnership for Patients Program

Individuals who join P4PP will have access to DirectTrust’s nationwide network of 58,000 healthcare organisations. They can also take advantage of Direct exchange, which enables simple electronic health information exchange similar to regular email, with added encryption and identity assurance for additional privacy protection.

“A cornerstone of nationwide efforts by the U.S. government to increase patient and family engagement is to make it easier for patients to access their health information via secure, electronic means,” said Jerry Cox, Director, Business Development with IdenTrust. “IdenTrust’s participation in the new DirectTrust Partnership for Patients Program reinforces our commitment to making trusted communications of healthcare information possible. It addition, it supports the strategy set forth by The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC’s) to enable and drive adoption of Health Information Exchanges (HIE).”

The Partnership for Patients Program was launched at the recent ONC Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
