In the spirit of continuous innovation, Moxa, a leading manufacturer of communications equipment for the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), recently announced the immediate availability of a new environmentally-hardened Ethernet switch offering high port density, intelligent management capabilities and advanced security to help unlock the value of IoT in industrial environments.

"At the heart of every industrial network are switches that essentially will make or break the network's performance and reliability. Unplanned downtime is expensive and can ultimately impact the profitability of the enterprise itself," Richard Wood, Product Marketing Manager. "Moxa's new EDS-518E switch offers the high bandwidth and uptime that will help enable both today and tomorrow's most challenging industrial IoT applications."

Providing an impressive 18 ports (14+4G) in a compact DIN-rail form factor, the new EDS-518E presents customers with a powerful new option to support and future-proof their industrial networks. Four combo Gigabit ports with built-in RJ45 or SFP (small form pluggable) slots enable network administrators to meet increased the bandwidth requirements of industrial applications involving big data and/or video over IP. Higher port density also makes the EDS-518E switch ideal for harsh industrial environments with limited installation space. The EDS-518E also carries industry certifications for intelligent transportation, rail wayside, oil and gas, factory automation and process automation.

Exceptional reliability

Consistent with Moxa's other Ethernet switch offerings, the EDS-518E is designed to improve uptime and performance of industrial assets. Unlike commercial-grade switches designed for networks that can afford slower recovery times, the EDS-518E features high-performance redundancy through Moxa's Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain technology, which supports sub-20 ms recovery time for networks of up to 250 switches. In addition, RSTP/STP and MSTP redundancy support provides compatibility with enterprise and third party network infrastructure. Software-based IEEE1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) ensures nanosecond timing synchronisation for packets-based networks, while TACACS+, SNMPv3, IEEE 802.1x, HTTPS, and SSH enhance overall network security.

The field-proven EDS-518E switch conforms to UL and ATEX standards for hazardous industrial locations, and is IEC rated against shock, free fall and vibration. It also was awarded the IPv6 Ready logo verifying interoperability.

Simple deployment

The EDS-518E features an intuitive web interface to quickly configure major managed functions. For larger deployments, Moxa's free MXconfig software can help reduce configuration time by up to 90% through mass configuration of switch features.
