The challenge was to find an organisation that could install an additional eight Pan Tilt and Zoom cameras around the entrance without having the possibility to install hundreds of meters of coax cable. With the Games set to start in just a few weeks, coax cable installation was not an option due to the required construction at this key entry point into Olympic Park. Additionally, some of the cameras had to be powered by batteries because electric power was not available. The only solution was wireless.
McKenzie Arnold selected KeyHole Security of Brighton, England to make the installation because they offered a suitable solution to this last minute challenge using AES Corporation’s BH4 IntelliVu transceivers.
The innovative AES IntelliVu BH4 is a multi-mode wireless transmission solution for use with voice, data and video for Security and CCTV applications. Complying with the International IEEE802.11n standard with a variable power output, the BH4 supports longer range higher bandwidth applications than traditional 802.11 Wi-Fi – up to 4000 meters indoors or outdoors – using a highly efficient built-in antenna or optional external antenna.
“I’ve been acquainted with the people at AES for many years and knew they would have a solution. Between Martin Tee, AES Corporation’s EMEA Regional Director and my team, we managed to get the units shipped from the USA, installed and running in only 4 days,” says Jason McCreanney, CEO of Keyhole Security. “AES Corporation’s Engineering Manager, Gui Goretkin, worked closely with our technical team of Matt Thomas, Stuart Weeks, and Keyhole Security CTO Dean Wormleighton, and got everything up and running in record time!”

Over the years, Keyhole Security has experienced a wide range of challenging CCTV installations and evaluated numerous wireless transmission systems. For the 2012 London Olympics they selected AES Corporation’s BH4 IntelliVu transceivers paired with MOBOTIX Corporation mega pixel cameras. “A key decision factor was that the BH4 IntelliVu transceiver is an ‘out of the box’ solution, delivered with the standard internal antenna, built-in software and all necessary accessories such as Power Supply Unit, PoE (Power over Ethernet) injector and stainless steel pole mount,” adds McCreanney.
Despite the congested skyline around Olympic Park, this combination of products offered excellent images from over 500 meters away. From the Park’s control room, TFL coordinators were able to keep a watchful eye on visitors arriving at the venue’s various above-ground and underground stations on state-of -the art 55” touch screen monitors.
The Keyhole Security wireless solution represented an enormous saving over conventional cabled installations, as well as saving Olympic organizers, athletes, and attendees from a totally unacceptable level of disturbance to the pedestrian and vehicular traffic accessing the Games.
