This June, the SANS Institute will debut its MGT512: SANS Security Leadership Essentials For Managers with Knowledge Compression course in Naples, Italy. The course has been updated to emulate the format utilised by many executive MBA programmes and  has been approved by CompTIA's CAQC programmes for Security + 2008 to ensure that managers and their direct reports have a common baseline for security terminology and concepts.

“Career managers now assigned security duties will gain sufficient understanding about attacks, defences, and networks to direct their staff with confidence, and to understand when vendors are making promises they cannot deliver,” explains course co-instructor Tim Harwood, “This course is recognised by the United States Department of Defence at its highest level of certification for security professionals, and is of great value for managers in corporations, civilian agencies, and organisations throughout Europe.”

Harwood is the Security Capability Lead for BP and prior to that was in the British Army for 23 years, primarily as a Military Policeman. He finished his career as the Senior Data Manager at the Central Criminal Records and Intelligence Office. Harwood has also worked with the UK Government working on a software design and implementation for UK Police Forces.

The course will be jointly taught by Mark Hardy, SANS instructor and founder and President of National Security Corporation. Hardy has been providing cyber security expertise to government, military, and commercial clients for over 30 years and also served as wartime Director, Joint Operations Center for US Pacific Command, and Assistant Director of Technology and Information Management for Naval Logistics in the Pentagon, with responsibility for INFOSEC. Captain Hardy was awarded the Defence Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, five Meritorious Service Medals, and 24 other medals and decorations.

The course focuses on the big picture of securing the organisation and includes network fundamentals, security technologies, using cryptography, defence-in-depth, policy development, and management practice. “Alongside enterprise managers, the course is of particular relevance to NATO and other military groups based in Europe which are increasingly the target of cyber warfare,” Hardy adds.

The course  provides preparation for the GIAC Security Leadership (GSLC) qualification and conforms with  Department of Defence Directive 8570 (DoDD 8570) which provides guidance and procedures for the training, certification, and management of all government employees who conduct Information Assurance functions in assigned duty positions.

The MGT512 course will take place from Monday 3rd to 7th of June at Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo. For More information on this course and to register, please visit:
