Trüb AG, one of the worldwide leading providers of high security identity and travel document solutions, has been selected as supplier of the new multi-purpose e-ID card for Nigeria. This highly unique electronic card is a combination of a national Identity Card complying with the ICAO standards and a MasterCard complying with the EMV standards for payment cards.
The new multi-purpose e-ID is a core element of the National Identity Management System (NIMS) directed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In this project, Trüb is a supplier to the local partner Auspoint Limited. The new Nigerian e-ID was launched on 28 August 2014 by the President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
One of the worldwide most ambitious national e-solution projects
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria developed one of the worldwide most ambitious and comprehensive e-solution projects. Core element of the project is the new e-ID, fulfilling various purposes and allowing for the use of a wide range of applications and services. The e-ID is in the first place a national identity and travel document according to the ICAO standards. Additionally, the e-ID is in the first phase equipped with more than a dozen applets offering a large variety of applications. As a worldwide singularity the e-ID is also a MasterCard payment card according to the EMV standards. Further applications are for example e-PKI (Public Key Infrastructure), offering strong authentication and digital signature or MoC (Match-on-Card) for secure identification. In a second phase further applications such as the Drivers’ License or e-services like e-Voting, e-Health or e-Transport are planned to be implemented.

High quality and security of polycarbonate documents
The new electronic Identity Cards supplied by Trüb meet the highest requirements for security and quality. They are made of fused polycarbonate films and laminated without adhesives.

The Nigerian e-ID cards are equipped with a chip module for the storage of the personal and biometric data (fingerprints) of the card holder as well as keys, certificates and other data for the use of the various e-services and applications.
For the use as an ICAO compliant travel document, the front of the e-ID card features the portrait and personal data of the card holder and the back features the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone). For use as a payment card, the front also features a unique EMV PAN number and the back has a magnetic stripe for ATM transactions and a signature field. The personalisation of the cards is performed with high security laser engraving. The national e-ID card, which was launched on Thursday, August 28, 2014 by President Goodluck Jonathan, is not only the largest formal rollout of an electronic payment solution in the country but also the broadest platform for financial inclusion on the African continent.
