Operators at the traffic monitoring centre belonging to the Southern Bavaria autobahn authority need to have the traffic situation in view at all times, whatever the weather conditions. They need to see clearly even when it’s raining, snowing and when the air is heavily polluted so in autumn 2011 the authority started and extended trial using an Argus high speed pan & tilt system from Geutebruck. This was installed on the A9 not far from Allianz-Arena near Munich. Here the autobahn has four lanes in each direction and is heavily trafficked with very high levels of exhaust fumes and pollution. Yet the system has worked reliably and maintenance-free in all weathers, through every thunder storm and in all temperatures, to the great satisfaction of the traffic management authority.

The mechanical demands on this kind of system are high. Besides the reliability of the pan/tilt function, the permanent cleanliness of the front glass is also crucial. To ensure that operators always have an unimpeded view, not only does Argus’s self-cleaning, hydrophilic coated window repel most dirt particles and water droplets, but here it is here backed up by an air blast cleaner which removes insects, spiders’ webs or stubborn debris on demand. This operator-controlled compressed air solution is easy to mount on the weather-proof camera housing, and like the pan & tilt system, it is fully integrated into the existing video system and controlled through it.

Alongside the lane sensors and other instrumentation providing information on speeds and lane blockages, video pictures provide operators with important visual information about the traffic situation which assists them in controlling and directing traffic. For instance when the traffic comes to a stand-still, camera pictures enable the operators to check whether the hard shoulder is clear before diverting traffic into it. They provide a valuable contribution to enabling safe decisions and hence safe journeys.
