Serving emergency notification needs of 13 jurisdictions throughout Garfield County, CO covering 2,958 square miles, the Emergency Communications Authority supports all types of citizen emergency 911 calls with dispatch facilities for law enforcement, fire suppression and emergency medical services.

The primary goal of the ISONAS project was to provide appropriate access controls for the Communications and Data Operations (Dispatch) Center in Rifle, CO as well as for the six remote Microwave radio sites which provide the communications backbone for the County’s emergency communications system.

According to Patrick Smith, Technology Manager for the Emergency Communications Authority, “As we built out our Microwave backbone throughout the County we wanted the ability to incorporate an IP-based remote access system into the design.”

“After a demo with ISONAS it became clear that the ISONAS product was such that we could selfintegrate at a rate that would fit our build out timeline of remote sites.”

All of the security systems for the Communications Authority’s facilities were planned into the systems build out from the beginning of the 3 year project.

The initial installation of 10 ISONAS PowerNet reader-controllers was accomplished at the central Dispatch Center, which acted as the product test-bed for access control as well as for video and alarm systems. The required support routers, servers and MUX devices easily allowed capacity for the ISONAS and the other planned security systems.

As the remote Microwave sites were constructed and brought online, the ISONAS system was extended on one-at-a-time, door-by-door basis. “Since the ISONAS system does not require a control panel, the incremental growth of the system was extremely cost effective as well as efficient”, according to Mr. Smith. “As with most high-value assets out there we also maintain site access security and 24X7 video surveillance at all remote and local facilities.”

The ISONAS system, including all remote sites, is managed, monitored and controlled from the main Dispatch Center with the use of the ISONAS Crystal Matrix Access Control Management software system.

The next project for access control will be to implement the ISONAS Mobile Easy Web application which provides for all system management activities, including the ability to remotely unlock doors via a cell phone; a capability that will be convenient with the very remote location of several of the radio sites.
