Over the years Dedicated Micros equipment has been widely used in a great variety of education establishments and in various situations. Here follow some examples:
Burnage High School in Manchester wanted to upgrade its CCTV installation to a modern digital system to move away from a "traditional" system monitoring the school out of hours to one which can help combat problems relating to daytime management issues such as property damage, general behavioural matters, truancy and bullying.
With a Dedicated Micros NetVu Connected DVR/NVR system almost sixty cameras were installed across the premises enabling key members of staff to see exactly what is happening around the school without needing to actually patrol the grounds or corridors - networked CCTV allowing the teacher to "be" everywhere at once.
Cambridge University's Wolfson College was looking at more cost-effective alternatives to the digital set up they had had previously. Dedicated Micros emerged as the most popular choice for one simple reason: it's so simple to use. It's also very robust and offers lots of popular functions such as activity search and telemetry at a very affordable price point.
At Wolfson College two 16-way NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs control a mixture of 20 fixed colour and mono cameras located over key entry/exit points in public areas, including halls of residence, lecture rooms, video rooms and the Lee Computer room, where students have 24 hour access to IT facilities via a college Smartcard. High quality digital images are monitored and recorded round the clock in the Porter's Lodge and are saved for 31 days onto the NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs internal hard drive.
DangerPoint is an innovative safety education centre created by the Police and the key agencies responsible for safety in North Wales. The centre has been designed to offer a series of safety-related interactive scenarios where children learn "hands on" about the risks and dangers in everyday life.
An NetVu Connected DVR/NVR and four cameras all from Dedicated Micros, provide spot monitor display of the centre's reception and shop area, as well as coverage of key exhibition zones including water, building site and home and garden safety. The CCTV solution is multi-purpose in operation, being used not only for general surveillance but also to observe how children interact with the displays, and for training purposes.
Leicester-based De Montfort University has adopted an advanced NetVu Connected surveillance solution linking 21 geographically dispersed campus buildings - using around 30 Dedicated Micros NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs and the associated user-friendly NetVu ObserVer GUI (Graphic User Interface) - to a control room in the Estates Services and Security building at the Leicester campus.
With the NetVu Connected system security staff can follow an incident right across campus, with one DVD holding the whole incident from start to finish, respond faster to situations as they develop and take centralised, proportionate, action to; for example, call out the police if a serious incident is in progress rather than sending in University security staff to access the situation on the ground first. Where necessary they are also in a position to supply first generation recordings to the police for evidential purposes.

Huddersfield Technical College has four key sites all of which are covered by its digital CCTV solution. Two NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs from Dedicated Micros are installed in the main control room and three further systems situated at the College's other sites. The remote NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs are linked back seamlessly over the network to the control room for centralised monitoring and review via NetVu ObserVer video management software.
Being a large college Huddersfield has all the usual issues but the Dedicated Micros CCTV is a great help, for example they had an incident involving theft. A report of a theft was received and they located using the CCTV a person acting suspiciously who was then detained and the police called. When the police arrived, with the capabilities of the new digital system, they were able to view the incident in a matter of seconds and be provided a CD as evidence.
Little Aston Primary School in Sutton Coldfield needed to protect its new outdoor interactive playground which has a Smartus computer nerve centre linked directly to the school's ICT suite. To guard against vandalism and theft of the school's new equipment, Little Aston opted for a Dedicated Micros NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs and a pole-mounted 2060 PTZ dome camera, both of which could integrate with the existing network of five CCTV cameras.
The NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs was installed in the school's main office and linked to a permanent large display screen. The flexibility the Dedicated Micros NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs offers means office staff can keep an eye on the electronic playground covered by the new dome camera and view the rest of the school premises covered by the existing camera network simultaneously.
Medway Borough Council needed a cost-effective way to monitor schools across the borough out-of-hours, they opted for an innovative solution based on Dedicated Micros' NetVu Connected DVR/NVRs. Running on the Council's existing broadband network, it required no additional infrastructure. The built-in software means that the images can be viewed and the cameras controlled from anywhere in the country.

The Closed IPTV solution from Dedicated Micros makes deploying an IP video system safe, secure and simple |
Out of school hours, the schools' security monitoring systems transfer to Medway Borough Councils central monitoring station that is responsible for the town centre as well. The networked CCTV allows the control room to view live images from every school kept running permanently on the monitoring station's bank of screens. When necessary, an operator can select a school and transfer the images straight to his or her personal screen at the touch of a button for instant verification. Careful camera positioning and immediate operator verification through the capacity to view all sites simultaneously means that critical images can be transferred directly to the police - who can take action straight away.
Recent developments at Dedicated Micros offers schools even more.
Closed IPTV provides simple to install, safe and secure IP video solutions across new or existing networks. Automatically allocating IP addresses to IP cameras by physical port, a Closed IPTV system is completely deterministic, creating firewalls and monitoring point-to-point IP connections so they cannot be hacked or intercepted. Critical to the security of a Closed IPTV system is the unique implementation of Trusted Endpoint technology; a secret signature, applied at lock down, enables endpoint devices such as IP cameras to be secure, immediately triggering a security alert should any interference be detected.
The level of security of the network is particularity important for schools when the wish to be confident that no one can access the images either from live cameras or stored on the system. Once a closed IPTV system is locked down no other device can access the system to view or insert images. Even if a pc is plugged into an Ethernet port on the system its lack of a Trusted Endpoint means it will be excluded from the system and an alarm raised immediately.
Schools and colleges are also an excellent example of where FireVu video smoke and fire detection and verification systems can be used. Educational institutions have periods when the are either partially or completely unoccupied should a fire alarm occur during these periods fire authorities can be reluctant to commit vehicles as no people are at risk and it could be a false alarm. With a FireVu system not only is smoke and fire detected rapidly but an operator can call up the associated camera image and confirm to the fire services that a real event is taking place, give them key information on the severity of the incident and point them quickly and accurately to its location.
