Hexham Bowling Club, New South Wales - remote monitoring by RemGuard
RemGuard Visual Management enhanced security at Hexham Bowling Club, New South Wales
RemGuard Visual Management - part of AD Group - and its remotely monitored, detector activated, CCTV technology is making a positive impact on crime 'down under' through its local franchise operation, RemGuard (Australia) Pty Ltd. One of the most recent successes has been at Hexham Bowling Club, situated just west of Newcastle in New South Wales. While the location backing onto the Hunter River means it is an extremely popular spot with members, the quiet isolation, late at night, has also made Hexham Bowling Club a target for criminals.

After two armed intruder attacks, and especially when female staff expressed concern for their safety when leaving late at night, Club Manager Jon Chin decided enough was enough. With the previous set-up thieves had a large window of opportunity to set off the alarms and make their escape before the police arrived. "Our problem was that thieves kept breaking in knowing that they could get away in the dark well before any intervention was possible", said Mr. Chin. "We badly needed some sort of pro-active system that could detect and deter intruders before they actually broke in."

The club already deployed mobile patrols, CCTV, and alarms, however this was proving to be expensive and ineffective in the environment and RemGuard was called in to provide a state-of-the-art system specific to the club's needs.

Because of the secluded location, detector activated, remotely monitored, CCTV was agreed upon, integrated with the club's existing alarm and camera system. Now persons detected by movement sensors loitering outside the club after closing time - when there is no legitimate reason for them to be there - trigger 'real time' video back to the Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC) and are challenged over the PA speakers, mostly before any building intrusion is actually attempted. It has been found by RemGuard that more than 99% of persons challenged in this way immediately leave the site stopping crime before it happens.

Said Lindsay Brooks, Managing Director, RemGuard Australia: "One of the key factors that influenced the Hexham Bowling Club Board to install RemGuard was the system's ability to manage threats to staff when they leave the premises after locking up. The solution adopted for staff safety was to install a PTZ (Pan, Tilt, and Zoom) camera above the main entrance overlooking the car park. Staff are now able to contact the Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC) when leaving, asking them to scan the car park and to track their movements until they are safely in their cars -- before being wished 'good night' over the PA speakers."

While Mr. Chin realises that no security system can be absolutely foolproof against determined thieves, he knows that the more barriers there are and the earlier intruders are identified and warned off, the more likely it is that they will move over to easier targets with much less risk of attack.

"Our staff now feel more secure, and we are also particularly pleased that RemGuard was able to re-use most of our existing CCTV cameras" said Mr. Chin. "They repositioned some to provide more effective coverage, and overlaid their solution over our existing DVR so the cost was affordable. The outlay has also been offset by not having to pay for random night patrols."
