About West Dunbartonshire Council

West Dunbartonshire Council is located in west-central Scotland, along the north bank of the lower River Clyde, northwest of Glasgow. It extends north to the shore of Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest loch, and encompasses an area of lowlands surrounding the Kilpatrick Hills, which stand in the centre of the council area. West Dunbartonshire lies entirely within the historic county of Dunbartonshire and contains many of Glasgow's commuter towns and villages as well as the city's suburbs.

About Boston Networks Ltd.

Boston Networks is the UK's leading provider of turnkey network infrastructure solutions and services that enable real business performance benefits from your communications network. Boston Networks design and build intelligent wireless networks and provide a portfolio of on site technical support services to ensure networks deliver the performance and reliability customers expect from any telecommunications provider.

The challenge

West Dunbartonshire Council had a licensed wireless solution in place for their many communication requirements; however it was proving to be unreliable due to the age of the equipment and the tree density across the link path. Moreover, the existing solution had low capacity and could only provide them with 23 Mbps bandwidth. Installing a traditional leased line was too costly and challenging in terms of lead time and so they sought a reliable and cost-effective wireless solution that could provide them with the high-bandwidth connectivity they needed between two key sites within the council estate.

The solution

To deploy the new link, West Dunbartonshire Council used system integrator Boston Networks who tested several solutions before selecting Alvarion's BreezeNET B300. Alvarion's PTP solution provides 240 Mbps bandwidth and features Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) capabilities. Where other solutions gave no connection, Alvarion's BreezeNET B300 provided high bandwidth and stable connectivity over a 1.7 km path.

The result

Alvarion's BreezeNET B300 addresses West Dunbartonshire Council's needs within budget and timeline. The council now enjoys enhanced, high-capacity voice and data connectivity for their two key sites. The BreezeNET B300 link operates in an NLOS environment where other solutions failed to and has opened the existing bottleneck, enabling the council to provide multiple and improved services to residents of West Dunbartonshire.
