Alvarion's wireless network provide connectivity for different environmental control applications

The challenge

Doñana National Park was looking to interconnect the control and recording system near the Doñana Palace and establish a video surveillance system for transmitting real time data in order to monitor and control the migration of birds and habitat conditions of protected species throughout the park. Using conventional radio links such as GPRS and GSM, the park sought to improve communications with a new and innovative technology.

The solution

In 2006 The Ministry of Science and Technology approved a project for the construction of new scientific-technical facilities (ICTSs) designed to provide an infrastructure for 24 selected centres in Spain, one of them being The Biological Reserve of Doñana (CSIC). SATEC chose Alvarion's wireless network to provide connectivity for different environmental control applications, as well as video surveillance for controlling and monitoring the behaviour of protected species such as The Iberian Lynx.

BreezeACCESS VL provides radio coverage over the entire reserve using PTMP architecture including a base station with four sectors for 17 km of coverage and a video surveillance system for controlling the ecosystem and species. The BreezeNET B PTP solution provides a 60 km high-capacity triple link from the turret to the University of Seville where investigators have access to real-time images and are able to share data with other centres worldwide.

The result

Alvarion's network enables real time control of the park species through the video surveillance system and the ability to share data with other centres throughout the world. The network's flexibility allows coexistence and control of the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system for collecting and transmitting data over the network, enabling to control the movement of certain species of bats to and from their nests. Weather conditions are also monitored with several flow meters and gages deployed throughout the park while telemetry devices monitor the park's flora. Furthermore, the park's families now have Wi-Fi Internet access for educational and recreational use when only a few months ago families had to travel 20 km to be connected.
