Spica’s access control, time & attendance system installed at the Split Airport
The new system uses RFID readers, two located at the employee's entrance and one in the airport restaurant

The Split Airport Kastela is a regional airport. Most of its traffic consists of charter flights carrying tourists from large airports across Europe. The airport will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2006. Although of modest size, this single runway airport plays an important role in Dalmatia. The number of passengers has been increasing steadily, rising from 800,000 in 2004 to almost one million in 2005. The 382 employees at the airport are determined to offer the highest quality service to their clients. In the first half of 2005, the airport installed a new time and attendance system replacing the old, DOS-based system utilising bar code technology.

Simple to use

In the past, the airport employees carried on them several ID cards, each serving a different purpose. Now they carry just one badge worn clearly visible. It includes the employee's pictures and is used for official identification. There are 600 such badges in use at the moment. The new system uses RFID readers, two located at the employee's entrance and one in the airport restaurant, and Legic smart cards. Collected data are processed using Spica's Time&Space (Time & Attendance and Access Control system).

At the moment, Legic smart cards are used in two applications. One is time and attendance management system, and the other is automatic payment in the airport restaurant. A third application, access control, is planned to be implemented soon.

The airport has been undergoing a continual process of modernisation for several years now. In 2005, the wireless radio network for passenger and luggage check-in has been introduced, ensuring error-free luggage handling.
