Chris Blacktin, an Axis Security Officer, has been rewarded with the "Service to the Community and Excellent Work" award in the annual North West Leeds Divisional Police Awards held at the University of Leeds.

The awards celebrate individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, says Alison Costello of the North West Leeds’ Divisional Standards Unit: “To receive a nomination is an impressive achievement, as the number of high quality recommendations submitted is so vast that not every nomination can always be included.”

Chris was nominated following an incident where an intruder alarm was activated at the Conference Auditorium at the University. The suspect was monitored on CCTV and University of Leeds Security Officer Richard Day and Chris were tasked to locate and apprehend the suspect. The male, who was carrying a crowbar, was stopped outside the Leeds Metropolitan University Students’ Union and arrested for ‘Going Equipped for Stealing’ under Section 25 of the Theft Act, 1968.

University of Leeds Security Officers, John Haigh and Mick Jowett and Axis Security’s Lee Mountford were also dispatched to help detain the suspect until the police arrived. The suspect, later named as Mark Devine, had committed numerous other burglary offences and was found guilty of theft, fraudulent use of stolen cards and burglary and given a two and half year jail sentence. Since his detainment, West Yorkshire Police has noted a drastic fall in the number of burglary offences reported by the University of Leeds and Metropolitan City Centre Campus.

Jonathan Levine, Axis Group CEO, is very proud to have Chris Blacktin as part of Axis Security’s team. “Chris is a credit to our business,” he says, “He has gone beyond what was expected and the result has made a significant impact on the community. It is a signal of what can be achieved when the correct systems are in place and the staff have the right training and attitude.”
