Shenzhen Sancom Electronic Technology chose Hikvision CCTV surveillance equipment to secure the entire complex

The success of the new system, with its sheer size and scale, is a landmark achievement for Sancom and Hikvision

Hikvision has enabled the modernisation of Shenzhen Bao’an Airport to be completed through the implementation of an analogue surveillance system

Shenzhen is located in the delta of China’s Pearl River and is one of Guangdong provinces major cities, one of the fastest-growing in the world. Bordering Hong Kong to the south, it was established as China’s first Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in 1979 and remains one of the most successful. Home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, headquarters of numerous high-tech companies, one of the busiest container ports in China and home to more than 14 million people, its vibrant economy attracts large numbers of business travellers and tourists.

The majority of domestic and international visitors pass through Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, located approximately 32 km northwest of Shenzhen city centre and home to several airline companies, including Shenzhen Airlines, Shenzhen Donghai Airlines and SF Airlines. The airport was opened in 1991 and has recently undergone a major expansion programme. The new, five million square foot third terminal was opened in November 2013 and replaces both older terminal buildings.

Modernising the airport’s surveillance

Modern airport terminals are a vast mixture of parking lots, hotels, retail outlets, food halls and travel hub. At Shenzhen, the new terminal houses 500 check-in counters and 58 departure gates and systems integrator Shenzhen Sancom Electronic Technology chose Hikvision CCTV surveillance equipment to secure the entire complex.

"From the beginning of the project, it was clear that the biggest challenge was the new terminal’s sheer scale,” says Sancom’s senior engineer Mr. Lin. “Securing every corner of the terminal, including the administrative offices, five-star hotels, shopping malls and parking areas, was a huge undertaking. Today, the total camera count is 485 but this may rise in the near future.

cameras while still providing the security teams with surveillance capabilities in all light conditions. Therefore, the low-light performance of all the cameras implemented through the complex was a key priority and we selected four types for the project.”

Analogue imaging in all areas

Within the terminal, including the check-in and departure areas, shopping malls and hotels, 308 Hikvision DS-2CC51A5P-VF indoor vari-focal dome cameras were deployed. This super low-illumination camera offers a 1/3” CCD sensor and colour sensitivity of 0.0001 Lux. The DS-2CC51A5P-VF also features smart IR, WD exposure compensation, true day and night mode, an 80° field of view, and a horizontal resolution of 700TVL. In total, 140 were implemented within the hotels and 168 within the other areas. Six of these cameras were also used within the parking area.

The majority of the cameras used in the parking lots were also super low-illumination, true day/night models offering colour sensitivity down to 0.0001 Lux. The DS-2CC11A5P-A 700TVL high-definition box camera also features a 1/3” CCD sensor, smart IR, digital zoom, digital WDR, and digital noise reduction (DNR) and a total of 121 were deployed, with a further nine units used in the hotels.

The DS-2CC51A2P indoor dome camera was deployed to monitor the elevators in all three areas of the complex. Auto-switchable between day and night and capable of monitoring down to 0.001 Lux, 24 of these compact units were installed – nine in the hotels, 3 in the parking area and 12 in the rest of the complex.

The fourth camera chosen for the project was the DS-2AF1-568 HD speed dome, which is especially suited to wide-area monitoring. This unit is equipped with an ultra-reliable 36X optical zoom lens that allows you to monitor a scene from any distance. Combined with its integrated 16X digital zoom, the total zoom ratio is boosted up to 576X for powerful close-ups and capturing extreme subject details. The DS-2AF1-568 is pre-set to pan at 540° per second

and tilt at 400° per second but can be manually panned and tilted at 0.1°-300° per second and 0.1°-240° per second respectively. This camera also features advanced programmable privacy masks, enabling simultaneous masking of up to eight zones, together with up to eight patrols, with up to 32 pre-sets per patrol. Ten cameras were deployed to monitor the outside of the hotels with 7 similarly deployed to monitor the outside of the administration zone.

Hikvision at the heart of the system

All 485 cameras across the Shenzhen Airport complex are linked to a Hikvision Video Server running iVMS-5000 video management software through a web of 129 DS-6704HW video encoders and 37 DS-6308D-T video decoders.

The video server is complemented by 16 DS-A80216S network storage units, each capable of holding up to 16 hard disk drives (HDDs) and equipped with dual Gigabit network interfaces. Total capacity of the system is 400 real-time recording channels for 1080p video

Landmark achievement

"The success of the new system, with its sheer size and scale, is a landmark achievement for Sancom and Hikvision,” says technical engineer Lin. “The analogue video surveillance system installed in Terminal 3 is the most successful analogue system we have ever implemented, whether you look at individual elements, such as codec technology, or the overall system performance. Above all, Shenzhen Airport’s own project leaders are also very satisfied with both the implementation of this project and the final performance of the system.
