Established in 1919, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd., also known as "K" Line, is the tenth largest shipping company in the world. Based in Japan, they specialise in marine transportation. One of the key locations that "K" Line operates is Port of Tokyo, one of the largest and busiest ports in Japan. Tens of thousand tons of goods are brought in and out at Shinagawa Container Terminal on a daily basis along with several hundred workers.
The challenge at sea port
In light of the increase in incidents at the terminal, "K" Line needed a security system to oversee the daily operation. However, ports are typically challenging environments to monitor. Strong winds, heavy rain, windblown salt, and fluctuations in temperature could make surveillance difficult. "K" Line required a surveillance camera that is tough yet precise and also can be integrated with all relevant systems.
The solution
After learning about MESSOA's success installation at Port of Taipei, "K" Line decided to adopt MESSOA as their surveillance security in Tokyo. The MESSOA NIC930HPRO network speed dome camera` was recommended for this project.
The camera supports the H.264 compression standard, which greatly reduces the video size video compared to MJPEG and MPEG4 without compromising image quality. Storage and bandwidth needs are reduced. H.264 is also a wireless-friendly format for remote installations based on a wireless network as in this case.
The NIC930HPRO is equipped with the latest generation of CCD sensor. 26X optical zoom with 12X digital zoom add up to a 312X zoom range that ensures more details. The lens can capture even the smallest objects in far-away distance and provides excellent picture sensitivity, which is vital for 24/7 surveillance. It also uses a high-performance zoom with superfine 0.02° pan controls to deliver smooth tracking, pinpoint capability. A 360° continuous pan operation range comes with a maximum speed of 430°/sec. These features provided the operators with an excellent overview of the entire port and the ability to zoom in on distanced objects without losing details.
Due to its wide area coverage, only five NIC930HPRO were needed to sufficiently cover the entire port area of over 321,000 sqm. A robust outdoor wireless power box and transmitter were used to keep wires and installation costs to a minimum. With the wireless network in place, the cameras were deployed without incurring high costs of installation and wiring.
The NIC930HPRO is made of IP66/IP67-rated die-casting aluminium housing that protects the camera from salt damages and strong rain that are commonly seen at coastal settings. The housing is exceptionally tolerant of extreme temperature and humidity changes, functioning well under -40°C~60°C temperature and 20-80% relative humidity range, both of which are common in coastal environments.
The result
After the installation, the operators can use a simple web browser to maneuver the cameras and to get a clear view of the port. They can now supervise activities and respond to incidents on a timely basis using just a web browser. Any problems can be quickly identified and eliminated. Theft and incident rates have also come down significantly since deployment.
