The challenge

Transports Metropolitan de Barcelona (TMB), the public company responsible for managing the bus network, metro line and other transport options in Barcelona, needed a modern security system to replace the old analogue installation in its Horta bus depot.

Solution

Sony worked closely with TMB and E-Solutions to install a security system bringing together SNC-RZ30P digital, IP network cameras and RealShot Manager.

The SNC-RZ30P belongs to the latest generation of security monitoring systems as it sends and controls images over a standard IP network.  The SNC-RZ30P comes with a high-speed PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) function, making it possible to quickly and easily locate any position within the camera sweep.  The camera has a pan range of 340°, a tilt range of 115, a 25x optical zoom and a 300x digital zoom.

The entire system is controlled by Sony's RealShot Manager video management software, with a client/server architecture via IP network.

Benefits delivered

The system comprises mostly mobile SNC-RZ30P cameras which are programmed to constantly "tour" the premises, while others are fixed in specific positions that can be modified from the control PC.  "Digital systems have the advantage that they can make cameras smart," commented Victor Ribera, Head of Telecommunications Systems at TMB.

There are 3 control PCs, however there is only one at the Horta bus depot from which the cameras can be monitored.  The images are recorded 24 hours a day, normally with a resolution of 320 x 340, but can be adapted as required.  "When functioning in monitoring mode, the cameras film with a pre-defined quality. Programmed recordings are made with a higher resolution, and if the security guard wants to see an improved picture, he uses maximum quality because it is likely that what he wants to see is important," explained Victor Ribera.

Following a tremendous amount of planning in the early stages of the project, the system has now been underway for several months and both Sony and TMB are extremely satisfied with the results.  "We started out with a dream and made it come true," said Miguel Angel Fernández, Head of Mobile Material and Installations at the Horta Operations Centre.

Miguel Angel Fernández continued by confirming the importance of having chosen the SNC-RZ30P model of Sony IP network camera.  "The specifications required were extremely complicated.  We are talking about mobile cameras, installed outdoors and in areas with varying degrees of lighting.  The SNC-RZ30P is a highly versatile camera that provides all of these features, as well as a high-quality picture."
