Background and the challenge for the customer

Jyväskylä Intersport has two sports stores. The size of the stores poses significant challenges for camera surveillance. The company faced one main challenge: How to upgrade the old camera surveillance system without replacing every single item.

Sony solution

Jyväskylä Intersport solved the problem using Sony’s hybrid solution which combined part of the existing analogue cameras with around twenty new HD and SD resolution IP cameras and an NSR-1200 recording device.

Partially updated existing analogue cameras from the two stores were used for the smaller of the two locations with a complete set of new cameras installed in the bigger store. All critical areas, such as entrances and exits, are now monitored by HD cameras while SD resolution devices are used in less critical areas. The installation has also been expanded to include more cameras around the premises. Top of the range cameras were selected from Sony’s range of products to ensure the very best image quality. “When the customer saw the quality of the new camera, they immediately settled on the better camera,” says Sami Kosunen of JVP-Group.

The two stores have been interlinked so that in the bigger store you can also see the pictures from the smaller store. It is also possible to connect the systems to each other via an external network so that it is possible to manage the monitoring of locations in different cities from a single point. The SNC-DS10, SNC-DH120 and SNC-DH240 cameras were deployed in addition to an NSR-1200 recorder equipped with an analogue board.

Results

“The system is very easy to use and you can learn its basic functions with little training,” says Kosunen. “What’s more, the recorder offers a range of interesting functions, so you can learn something new every day.”

The system, which was commissioned in early autumn, was tested in a real life situation soon after its installation when a group of shoplifters were caught red-handed. “We showed the police a still image from an HD camera and they were very surprised at the high quality of the image,” says Kosunen. “Having an image quality which is better than that of many digital cameras makes it easier to provide evidence when situations arise.” The resolution of the HD cameras is 1920 x 1440 pixels.
