Background

When it built its new Sixth Form Building, Dartford Grammar required a robust video security system which would offer the highest quality surveillance and monitoring throughout the premises, was easy to operate would integrate seamlessly with its existing video security solution. A Sony IP-based security solution was chosen integrating a combination of models from its E-Series of cameras with Sony’s Scalable Management Software, which enables simple management of large networks of cameras. The installation is a step into the future for the school, which currently uses an analogue system throughout the rest of the school buildings, and is using the Sixth Form building’s new system as a test bed for a wider IP-based roll-out, as it continues to improve and evolve its technology deployment.

Why Sony was selected

Education environments require sensitive security solutions, which offer the best quality images and coverage without intruding on students and teachers. Being a long-term Sony customer, who has worked closely with ICL for a number of years on installations across the school, Dartford Grammar trusted Sony, not only to deliver the highest quality security solution, but one which could complement and integrate with its existing system. Thanks to the depth of ICL’s industry and operational expertise and familiarity with Sony products, the company was able to deliver a system which integrated into its existing system, was easy to operate and provided high quality footage which can be quickly reviewed following specific incidents in the school. The system not only secures the building, but also future-proofs the school’s investment through delivering Full-HD imagery at an affordable price point.

Matt Chapman, Director of ICL Solutions says of the solution: ‘Having worked with Sony for many years, we have been blown away by the breadth and quality of its video security systems which meet the high standards of a range of applications, from hospitals to schools. Dartford Grammar required a future-proofed, flexible solution which secured the new Sixth Form building but had the potential to be rolled out across the school in replacement of its current analogue system, so the combination of Sony’s cameras with its management software was the ideal combination. Sony’s Scalable Management Software was ideal for facilitating this as it reduces the workload for management, capable of managing large numbers of cameras simply, without administrators having to master a complicated set of commands to monitor and maintain the system, Sony’s Scalable Management Software has made it easier then made it easier than ever for Dartford to adopt the new technology.’

Sony Clarity and Quality - Two types of Full-HD cameras from Sony’s E-Series line-up were selected for the installation at Dartford Grammar, which comprises a large mixture of internal full-HD mini-dome cameras & external full-HD bullet cameras. Each unit includes Day/Night functionality which ensures consistently footage regardless of the time of day. Sony’s Distributed Enhanced Processing Architecture (DEPA) then ensures efficient data processing, while the Exmor CMOS sensors guarantee sharp pictures. These technologies work together to provide easy to review, high quality film content in every lighting condition, whether inside the classroom block or in the surrounding area.

Darren Mussenden, IT Manager at Dartford Grammar commented: ‘When we built the new Sixth Form Building, we knew we had to install a security solution which integrated with our existing system, was simple to operate, but did not compromise the security of our students and teachers. ICL had recommended Sony’s cameras and Scalable Management Software from the outset and helped to guide us through our first step towards an IP-based future with this installation - we have not been disappointed. The best of breed IP technology delivers outstanding image quality and brings with it a whole host of more flexible surveillance options that will support our drive for best in class, round the clock surveillance.’
