The recently opened Everyone Active Basildon Sporting Village is both a sporting and leisure facility for the local community and has been named in LOCOG’s official Pre Games Training camp guide for London 2012. Systems installer PEL Services was approached to provide and install public address and sound equipment to support the needs of a number of different locations around the Sporting Village site.
Bosch loudspeakers are robust, require minimal power and are easy to install and maintain, whilst also providing the highest quality of sound reproduction and sleek design, says Vic Swain, Engineering Director at PEL Services: “In addition, all of its acoustical products either meet or exceed international standards, so in all some five different loudspeaker models from Bosch were specified and installed by PEL Services.”

One of the ‘five’ was the new Bosch hemi-directional loudspeaker, which was used to provide coverage of the Sports Hall, Gym Hall and Gym Exercise Hall. Utilising advanced filtering and a unique combination of 14 drivers, this powerful loudspeaker delivers clear speech and excellent music reproduction, even at the boundaries of its projection range. As architecturally impressive as it is functional, the durable housing produces superb bass reproduction while avoiding unwanted resonations. Vic Swain says that this was the first time that PEL had used the Bosch hemi-directional loudspeaker but expectations were completely fulfilled: “We really liked the hemi-directional speaker – we hadn’t used it before, but had seen demos of it in Germany and were very impressed.
“It is an excellent loudspeaker and very few of them are required to cover a large area – such as the high-ceilinged Sports Hall at Everyone Active Basildon Sporting Village – making it an economically sound choice.”

It features a 90 degree opening angle, which means that few units are required to cover a given area. Its wide frequency range also results in better speech and music reproduction, while water and dust protection to IP 65 ensure that it can withstand everyday conditions. Finally, the Bosch ceiling loudspeaker perfectly fitted the requirements of the Wet Change Areas because it is both powerful and IPx4 water-protected from the front, enabling it to function effectively even in humid environments. It is compact with a modern and unobtrusive styling, and easy to install as a result of its integral mounting clips.
Vic reports that the installation of the equipment went very smoothly: “The detailed installation instructions that came with each piece of kit were a great help. We were concerned about installing the hemi-directional speakers, as this was the first time that we had used them, but our concern proved to be completely unfounded and the speakers were installed with a single ‘Gripple’ cable suspension plus safety. “We would have no hesitation in installing Bosch kit in the future and would highly recommend these audio products,” he adds.
