Rifatron's digital recorder creates a safe and secure campus

Rifatron's hexa-plex digital video recorder (DVR) has been chosen by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) as the recording system to provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. The hexa-plexer is a Rifatron stand-alone DVR with 6 simultaneous operations: live display, recording, playback, network monitoring, back-up, remote data set-up.

The 16 channel iMDVRS-1648 has up to 400 frame per second (PAL) as its recording speed, up to 576 line resolution, 31 day recording, 4500GB hard disk as max storage capacity, watermarking, internal uninterrupted power supply (UPS), remote viewer and PDA monitoring software- all within the single product.

The Campus Security Control Centre (CSCC) of PolyU is comprised of dedicated in-house security personnel who are focused on the delivery of quality security services to 250,000 students, 1,031 teaching staff, and 208 administrative staff.  Additionally, the campus community uses an Access Control and CCTV systems, which includes Rifatron's standard MPEG4 technology digital recorder.

Installer, Merit-Lilin, reports that the Rifatron recorder is meeting the needs of a whole digital security system for campus safety and security.  Mike Tam of Merit-Lilin says: "There are some specific features of the Rifatron digital video recorder that security staff or guards find invaluable.  Being able to watch the site from a remote location using a PDA or pocket PC is one, as is the ability to view more than one site at any time.  A security manager can remain in control when he leaves the office at the security control centre."

Merit Lilin has installed 960 different cameras, including speed dome cameras, fixed high-resolution cameras and 60 digital recorders for department of Business, department of Communication, department of Hotel & Tourism Management, department of Design.  An additional 70 DVRs will be installed for the newly constructed University Hotel and other departments within 2007 according to the installer.

The Campus Surveillance Program, customized by Rifatron's software development kit (SDK), is a central surveillance system solution which monitors multiple sites on the PolyU campus with video, audio and alarm signals over one network.  If microphones are attached to a DVR, the guard can hear live sound over the network vividly.  A security guard can track down alarm signals easily and instantly when any alarm is detected throughout the entire campus.  The user double-clicks on the blinking icon on the map, and the s/w opens the linked sub-map in the window automatically.

Lisa Kwan, Head of Library Media Service, states: "The new remote access s/w and digital video surveillance system is an extremely useful tool for monitoring; furthermore, the system has cut down on administration costs.  We can access the DVR by simply entering an IP address on Internet Explorer for web-viewer as well."

A spokesperson from CSCC says: "Rifatron has given us greater protection for our assets, and we have a much better maintenance regime.  It's a good system - we can clearly see and record evidence of an incident.  The CCTV and the associated signage have a crucial but immeasurable deterrent effect."
