Axis was chosen to supply a video encoder and HDTV network cameras |
St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School, Liverpool needed to replace its existing, inflexible and slow analogue CCTV system with a more effective and robust IP-based surveillance solution that could be easily accessed remotely. The school had a limited budget, so needed a cost-effective, user-friendly solution that was easy to install and would provide high quality images that could clearly identify trespasser and thieves, and improve the safety of staff and pupils. The school also wanted a solution which was easy to control and could allow much faster access to archive footage.
Solution
Recognising the analogue CCTV system needed to change in order to meet its requirements, the school turned to Liverpool-based installer Focus Fire & Security who assisted by their security consultant Colin Leary, designed a system recommending the AXIS Camera Companion IP surveillance solution specifically designed for small systems of up to 16 network cameras.

St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School is a large voluntary aided school, teaching mixed students in the Liverpool area. The school provides full-time education for 336 students and part-time education for a further 60 pupils through its onsite nursery department. The school is housed over 2 modern buildings, gymnasium/assembly hall, large outdoor play area, a sports field and extensive grounds.
Having had a small, outdated analogue CCTV system for many years, the school was keen to replace it with a more effective, fully-IP surveillance solution that could be accessed remotely when staff were off-site and out-of-hours. The school’s previous system was very cumbersome, slow to retrieve recorded footage and made it difficult to control key aspects.
An easy-to-use high definition solution
St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School understood the many benefits of IP surveillance, and was convinced that a next generation CCTV system would best fit its needs. The school contacted security installer and Axis partner, Focus Fire & Security who showed them a range of surveillance solution to help them overcome their issues.

AXIS M7010, a 16-channel video encoder with highly intelligent video capabilities, such as video motion detection and active tampering alarm, enabling the school to utilise some of its analogue cameras chosen to remain on-site and to seamlessly integrate them onto the new IP surveillance network and video management software.
Allowing staff to react quicker
Like many educational facilities, St Michael’s Catholic Primary School does not have the resource for continuous real-time CCTV monitoring. Installing an IP surveillance system with good recording quality which facilitates the fast retrieval of images was vital.
The school’s existing analogue system didn’t allow remote viewing, was difficult to integrate with latest technology and was maintenance intensive. Through licence free AXIS Camera Companion software, the school now benefits from remote access to video from any number of locations, advanced search capabilities, simultaneous record and playback and unlimited storage; to name just a few.
If a camera is tampered with, or if there is noise or motion in a building after hours, an automatic notification is sent, enabling security staff to react quickly. If needed, high-quality video images can be easily shared with local police via the Internet or mobile devices. Simply having surveillance cameras on show at strategic locations throughout school buildings and outdoors areas can help deter thieves, vandals and other criminals from indulging in illegal activities.
