The news that the Government is pushing for the phase-out of traditional light bulbs in favour of energy-efficient products by 2011 has been welcomed by Raytec, and the company is calling for security planners to take a lead in switching away from inefficient halogen lamps.

"To help installers and system designers better understand the energy-efficiency of their systems Raytec has produced an energy and cost-savings calculator," explains Shaun Cutler, Raytec Managing Director.  "Whether you are using White Light or Infra-Red you can see at-a-glance how much energy and money you'll save by using more efficient illuminators."

Raytec has pioneered the use of quick-start LED-based White Light, with its Raylux range, which uses significantly less electricity for more output - in some cases consuming less than a tenth of the energy - which means that even medium-size users can save thousands of pounds in running costs as well as help reduce needless CO2 emissions.

"As an industry we can no longer afford to sit by and use power-hungry security lights without worrying about their impact on the environment, or their running costs," added Sean Cutler.  "The announcement by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn that wasteful incandescent bulbs are to be phased out reflects similar moves towards more sustainable lighting solutions across Europe and in North America.  Where effective, low energy alternatives are available, governments recognise the sense in avoiding power hungry products."

He added that all Raytec White Lights and Infra Red illuminators are designed to comply with any likely future legislation, with the efficiency of the LEDs maximised by Raytec's unique Cool Running thermal management system.

"Energy efficiency, value for money and optimum performance should now be the priorities for all security system designers and installers.  To help them make the right choices Raytec has also developed a lighting support pack, including the latest copy of our Complete Guide to CCTV Lighting."
