Viseum has designed a range of software to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of CCTV systems.  The company has spent a significant amount of time assessing operational CCTV systems, looking at ways of improving their capacity to prevent and detect crime.

Most CCTV systems require highly skilled operators to monitor approximately 50 cameras simultaneously.  Due to the sheer volume of information operators are required to process, it is estimated that a proportion of these cameras will not be continually watched; leaving some locations with inadequate surveillance, an accepted norm prior to the availability of Viseum.  The Viseum Virtual Operator technology was developed to cover these lower priority cameras, increasing crime detection to levels un-matched by any other automated solution.  The technology used has recently been singled out and recommended by the UK DTI as a best of British innovation.

The Viseum system works by using an array of reference cameras to control a PTZ camera, directing it to specific activity in the areas covered.  The system is capable of seeing further than the human eye so it can detect events that occur a significant distance away.  Without Viseum, these incidents would usually go unnoticed.

The system was recently trialled by Luton Borough Council on a high-rise housing estate.  The concurrent recordings from the camera array and PTZ camera provided sufficient evidence for a number of criminal prosecutions to occur, resulting in an overall reduction in the area's crime rate.  Stuart Thompson, Viseum Managing Director explained, "The combination of panoramic and detailed recording has proven more valuable than we first thought.  Superior evidence of the actual crime is captured and stored by both the PTZ and reference cameras including, most significantly the time before and after the crime.  Putting the crime in context in this way has helped police in detection and securing prosecutions".

Gary Crucefix, from Luton's Capital and Asset Management team added, "The recorded images provided us with detailed information that led to prosecutions.  Our operators found the system simple to use and were confident they were not missing critical events."

The recordings from the estate provided watermarked  time referenced evidence.  Detailed images of faces and clothing were key to the successful prosecutions, which included GBH and breaking and entering crimes.  The navigation and interrogation of the recorded video data was fast and simple to use and operators were competent with the system within hours.

The Viseum range uses cutting edge technology to provide down to earth practical solutions to CCTV operational issues.  Viseum has clearly done its homework in establishing the needs of those responsible for security and crime detection and can now deliver a 24/7 surveillance system with outstanding functionality.  Viseum appears to have a crime fighting weapon range that is going to have a huge impact on the quality of CCTV system efficiency and effectiveness for years to come.
