One of the UK's leading event venues, Manchester's G-MEX & MICC (Manchester International Convention Centre) has modernised its CCTV system as part of plans to attract a wider range of prestigious events.

G-MEX/MICC, which will be hosting the annual Labour Party Conference this autumn, has been equipped with two of the new-generation Kollector PRO digital video recorders from Vicon.  The system, installed by Con-Tec Solutions Ltd, also comprises 23 dome cameras, a Vicon keypad and the powerful ViconNet software package.

"This equipment really puts us at the cutting edge and gives us first class CCTV coverage throughout venue," says Security Manager Mike Williams.

The Surveyor VFT dome cameras have been sited to protect all doors at the venue.  The models used include the SVFT day/night model which features variable-speed drive, environmental housing and 23X high-resolution camera/lens as well as the Roughneck Impact-Resistant range.

They have been added to a network of cameras, which gives full coverage of internal and external key points and are already proving highly effective.  "We have been able to deal with a number of incidents thanks to the clear images that we are getting," says Mr Williams.  "In one recent case we identified two individuals who tried to steal goods from an exhibitor at one of our shows.  The clarity of our CCTV evidence led to them being quickly arrested."

The G-MEX team is particularly impressed with the playback and video management features offered by the Kollector PRO DVR and ViconNet software.

ViconNet allows system managers to view images from any authorised PC workstation at the centre.  They can also log on from a PC at a remote location should that be necessary.  ViconNet features geographical mapping and control and an active 4-output analogue matrix.  The result is a total system control station allowing users to view, control and configure any ViconNet DVR or IP device on the network.

Con-Tec has also installed a new Vicon flat screen monitor in the main reception area at G-MEX, plus the latest Vicon slimline keypad with joystick.

With one of the most advanced CCTV systems now in place ahead of the Labour Party conference, G-MEX management are aiming to attract more high profile events to Manchester as a result.  "Our policy is to have the most up-to-date security technology available because our customers regard this as a very important factor when choosing their venues," adds Mr Williams.
