Vicon has come out with a white paper on megapixel cameras
The Vicon white paper identifies some of the key benefits of megapixel camera technology
Vicon has published a white paper, which provides a realistic overview of the benefits and applications for megapixel technology.

"There is a significant and growing body of users and integrators who are seriously considering CCTV cameras capable of delivering very high quality images," said Richard Allen-Miles, Vicon's Sales Director for the UK and Ireland. "There is no doubt that megapixel cameras offer a very good option, particularly when there is a requirement for ‘identification' grade images.  It is important however that customers understand both the limitations as well as the strengths of this recent advance in CCTV technology so that they are able to can make an informed choice."

The white paper identifies some of the key benefits of megapixel camera technology and explores some opportunities arising from the fact that compared to a standard camera, a megapixel camera records many times as many pixels within each video frame.

It also highlights that an installation requires fewer megapixel cameras than would be required using standard video cameras and yet still manages to capture the same level of detail. This includes the possibility of splitting the video from one megapixel camera into multiple "virtual cameras". However, the white paper also brings to the readers' attention that megapixel cameras currently only transmit between 2 and 15 frames per second, which may be too low for some applications, and megapixel cameras may not perform well under certain lighting conditions.

The white paper is available to read and download here.
