Minneapolis/St. Paul Regional Transportation Authority Standardises on Verint Video Management Software for Central Corridor Light Rail Transit Project, Creating Unified Approach to Security

Metro Transit Police Department, part of Metro Transit in Minneapolis/St. Paul, is extending its investment in Verint technology, standardising key parts of its transportation technology platform with Nextiva Video Management Software (VMS) for the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (CCLRT) Project. Moving from its legacy security and business systems to a unified approach, the Verint VMS solution is helping the organisation’s Metro Transit Police force advance its ability to monitor and secure the Twin Cities’ current and new light rail and commuter trains and passengers, as well as enhance investigation capabilities and increase response times.

Metro Transit is one of the country’s largest transit systems, providing more than 80 million annual passenger trips throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul region. It operates the Hiawatha light rail line, Northstar commuter rail line and 123 bus routes. Metro Transit employs its own sworn police force committed to the safety of its customers and employees, and serves eight counties and 85 cities in the region. Starting in 2010, it embarked on a four-year construction project to expand operations with an 11 mile line connecting downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis with existing lines. The initiative, known as the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (CCLRT), is adding 31 new light rail transit vehicles and 18 new stations.

Taking a proactive approach to security, the Metro Transit Police Department launched an initiative to standardise its transportation and security technology platform in conjunction with the CCLRT Project. Since 2009, Metro Transit has leveraged a wide array of Verint’s comprehensive security solutions to monitor portions of its operations — from its mobile fleet and light rail systems to its stations — and help migrate from analogue to IP-based video. Based on its experience and success using Verint solutions and the technology’s open architecture platform that integrates with third-party systems, Metro Transit selected the Nextiva Video Management Software to help achieve the objectives of the CCLRT standardisation initiative. Taking a phased approach to implementation, the organisation began its rollout in September 2012.

"Metro Transit Police has been very pleased with the scalability, reliability and results that Verint has delivered over the years"

“Metro Transit Police has been very pleased with the scalability, reliability and results that Verint has delivered over the years. We look forward to experiencing the additional benefits that this next-generation of video management software will bring to even more members of our organisation,” says Brian Weaver, senior asset protection specialist, Metro Transit Police Department.

Nextiva Video Management Software offers policy-based video distribution, networked video viewing and investigation management to help security staff rapidly detect, act upon and investigate security breaches and other threats. Automated video system health monitoring helps manage large, geographically distributed video operations and streamline video system uptime to help ensure video availability. At Metro Transit, the Verint VMS solution is capturing video from hundreds of cameras and providing the organisation with a fully redundant solution to monitor its new urban mass-transit system.

“We’re pleased to continue our work with the Metro Transit Police by implementing a cutting-edge approach to further advance its security operations,” says Steve Weller, senior vice president and general manager, Verint Video and Situation Intelligence Solutions. “Our long history, partnership and ongoing commitment to providing innovative, reliable and scalable IP video solutions can help simplify operations and drive extended value and return on investment for years to come.”

Around the world, transportation hubs of various sizes count on Verint Video and Situation Intelligence Solutions to deliver advanced security and operations intelligence. Based on years of experience, Verint has a proven track record of delivering scalable, fault tolerant, high-availability solutions designed to cover security and surveillance across a transportation centre’s entire network — from railway and metro stations, to bus stops, parking lots and other facilities. Verint Nextiva enhances situational awareness, helps improve emergency preparedness and response, and provides authorised personnel with actionable intelligence for their security operations.
