Security Industry Association, leading trade group for businesses in the electronic and physical security market
The Security Industry Association has endorsed a new bill to improve security at wastewater treatment plants
The Security Industry Association has endorsed a new bill that would improve security at wastewater treatment plants.

The "Wastewater Treatment Works Security Act of 2009" (H.R. 2883), introduced by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, on June 16, would authorise $200 million in annual Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants through 2014 for certain security enhancements and would require security assessments of wastewater treatment plants that include a site security plan.

"While many wastewater treatment plants have made security improvements since 9/11, these essential facilities are often among the most vulnerable parts of our nation's critical infrastructure," SIA Director of Government Relations Don Erickson said. "Other places get more attention and security funding, but having a treatment plant rendered inoperable would be disastrous for a community. Wastewater treatment plants provide critical services to millions of Americans and thousands of businesses, and the federal government should strengthen its commitment to their security. We are happy to support Congresswoman Johnson's bill, and we will do our best to work toward its passage."

The legislation awaits action by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
