 HMS Daring
Motorized zoom lenses from Rainbow are being used on the new Type 45 destroyer
Motorized zoom lenses from California-based Rainbow are being used on the new Type 45 destroyer which will be the largest and most powerful air defence destroyer ever operated by the British Royal Navy. The first of the vessels, HMS Daring, sailed into Portsmouth, England, last month to be greeted by a 15-gun salute and thousand of well-wishers including schoolchildren from across Hampshire.

The 7,350-tonne warship was built on the River Clyde with the construction work being split between Vosper Thornycroft and BAE Systems Naval Ships. Her likely crew will be 190 with space allowing for transport of specialist teams for para-military operations and disaster relief which can include hosting helicopters.

The prime role of the $1.5bn destroyer will be anti-air warfare as well as the protection of UK national and coalition forces against enemy aircraft and missiles. She will take up duties after extensive sea trials during the rest of 2009.

First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, said: "If we are to fulfil an expeditionary strategy and go where the Government wants us around the world, we must go with the right air cover and this is exactly what Daring provides."

Rico Martinez, Sales and Marketing Director at Rainbow said: "The ship has taken more than two million man hours, 2,800 tonnes of steel and more than 40 tonnes of paint. We are delighted that our motorized zooms form part of the viewing systems."

About the lens

The 1" format lens has a focal length of 16~160mm with an aperture range of F2.2~1200. Optical back focal distance is 18.6mm (in air) and the units can operate between temperatures of -10~+50°C. They weigh approx 49.4 oz. (1400g).

All of Rainbow's motorised zooms are available with presets. They can be supplied with a video type auto-iris connector for most cameras where required. Rainbow lenses feature all-glass optics and are colour corrected. They are covered by a four-year warranty.
