Virginia Tech University became the scene of a gruesome bloodbath. Five years later, the Newtown shooting resulted in mass casualties of administrators, teachers, school children, and others. The inability to effectively barricade classrooms and offices in these situations made Ohio state natives Bill Cushwa and Dave Soulsby take action. The men formed National School Control Systems, worked with school administrators and safety forces, and patented the BEARACADE® Door Control System, as a way to protect those most vulnerable.
The company recently sent out samples of the BEARACADE system to 273 School Superintendents in Kansas because school districts nationwide are looking for safer ways to protect our children. “As parents of K-8 children who are concerned about the uptick in school shootings, my friend Dave Soulsby and I realised that we needed to create an accessible and practical solution to keep children safe,” said Bill Cushwa, CEO, National School Control systems, the developer of the BEARACADE Door Control System.
“Virtually any environment that workplace violence could present itself is appropriate for the use of a BEARACADE Door Control System,” says Cushwa. “While our initial focus has been on K-12 schools, the application of BEARACADE extends to any corporate workplace environment, government building, hospitals, university settings including dormitory rooms and classrooms,” said Dave Soulsby.
Last summer, Ohio’s Mentor Public Schools ordered 500 devices that were ready for the start of fall classes. “We have also sold to churches due to their open access, multiple rooms, vacation bible schools, and offices,” says Cushwa. “We have sold to government, business, and non-profit entities for offices that are concerned about active shooters, domestic violence issues, and disgruntled employee situations.”
