FCC is pleased with the system that it has contracted with Tyco to expand its Access Control and CCTV Systems through Tyco’s partner JGCM
Working closely with Tyco, FCC upgraded to Software House’s C•CURE 9000 access control solution

When leading oil refining industry expert Fabrica Carioca de Catalisadores decided to upgrade the security system at its 44-acre Brazilian headquarters, the company worked with Tyco to integrate new access control and video management products which ultimately resulted in an easier-to-use, more robust security system.

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Fabrica Carioca de Catalisadores S.A. (FCC) is a joint venture that joins the tradition and know-how of two world giants of the oil and petrochemical areas – Petrobras and Albemarle Corporation. Founded in 1985, this technology company engages in the production and supply of petroleum refining catalysts and additives for the oil refining industry in South America. With a 2009 revenue of BRL 332 million, FCC holds the leading equity in the market of catalysts for the oil refining industry in the world.

A company with this much market share needs a state-of-the-art security system. So, in 2009, FCC knew it was time to update their access control and event management system. Working closely with Tyco, the company decided to upgrade to Software House’s C•CURE 9000 Access Control Solution. The decision was based on the fact that the new C•CURE 9000 offers numerous benefits, including an easy-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI), reliable technology, compliance with IT policies and requirements, and the ability to easily create numerous types of reports. But perhaps the most important factor in the decision was the ability to fully integrate the C•CURE 9000 with FCCs existent Intellex Digital Video Management system.

Once the upgrade and integration was complete, FCC’s security operations immediately began working in their 12 monitoring and administration stations to take control of their entrances and exits safely. All personnel and clearances records were stored in a database server, and employees and visitors were now expected to wear identification badges at all times while at work. Visitors, including vendors, were also required to enter at each building’s security entrance, sign in, leave identification, receive a temporary badge and then have access throughout the facility.

“With the new, integrated system, everything runs more smoothly, and our operators are more efficient,” says Rodrigo Martins, Enterprise Security Manager, FCC. “In the event of a security breach, they do not need to waste time searching video on the Intellex remote clients. Instead, the minute an event is detected in the CCTV system, the operator receives an automatic notification on their screen and they can immediately review the footage.”

Martins adds that since the system is fully integrated, the Access Control software is also capable of automatically notifying an operator about an access breach.

“Should an access event occur, such as a forced door, the Access Control system will automatically fetch the image from the camera closest to the event, and display the image on the operator’s screen,” he says. “Throughout the whole event, the operator didn’t need to request anything – all the images were immediately provided to him/her.” FCC is so pleased with the system that it has already contracted with Tyco to expand its Access Control and CCTV Systems through Tyco’s partner JGCM – Sistemas de Segurança e Automação. The access control system, C•CURE 9000, will be upgraded from Series N system software to Series P - which means it will be able to manage and control up to 128 card readers. In addition to improved access control, FCC has chosen to expand its CCTV system with the powerful and most innovative hybrid digital video recorder – American Dynamics’ HDVR and IP VideoEdge Camera Box. The HDVR provides seamless integration and recording of both analogue and IP video surveillance cameras on an enterprise device. With HDVR acquisition, FCC will protect its analogue camera investment, while considering the transition to IP cameras and enjoying the benefits of a mixed environment.

FCC’s fully integrated system is already easy to navigate, offers improved response time, and makes operators more efficient. With the new upgrades the company is poised to install, FCC can look forward to even stronger security for its employees and its business.
