The University of Edinburgh has strengthened its relationship with ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a UK division of ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions, by specifying its high-quality door closer products across the site.

Established in 1583 and with a student population of over 35,000, the University needed a reliable door closer solutions provider to help keep its students, staff and contract workers safe and secure.

Door closers for university accommodation

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions has proven itself to be that provider. The company has supplied more than 300 of its DC500A CAM-Motion door closers and over 60 of its G460 slide rails during the last 18 months, installed in both new buildings and retrofitted throughout the university’s public, commercial and residential sites.

Cameron Duncanson, Maintenance Services Co-ordinator at the University of Edinburgh, explains: “We have been continually impressed with the high quality of the company’s DC500 door closer range, particularly in our student accommodation, meeting BS EN 1154 requirements for controlled door closing devices. From my experience, we know with confidence that installing a door closer from ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions means that it will tick the box in terms of quality, reliability and performance.

"Another advantage to working with ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions is that the technology has been designed to be robust and withstand heavy use"

Robust door technology

Another advantage to working with ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions is that the technology has been designed to be robust and withstand heavy use. This reduces our lifecycle costs, safe in the knowledge we can fit the same proven product again and again. Furthermore, we know that security of supply is assured with ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions’ range. This means we can simply order the desired product when required, resulting in less stock for us to carry, which helps reduce our overheads.”

Barry Harris, Sales Manager Sector Specialist at ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, adds: “Whether it’s public university buildings, laboratories or more traditional learning environments for lectures and seminars, the university can depend on us to deliver a solution that is fit for purpose. Our range of high-performance door closers have been developed to meet the exacting standards required from a university, and the success of our DC500 door closer throughout the institution’s many sites demonstrates this.”

Door closer and slide rail installation

Featuring Cam-Motion technology to ensure the door is light to open while retaining its closing power, the DC500 is offered with a standard or height-adjustable guide rail, and can be installed in hinge or non-hinge sides, in either standard or frame applications. The door closer is ideal for single action doors up to 1100mm wide, and suitable for fire and smoke protection doors.

Barry concludes: “We look forward to a long-lasting relationship with the University of Edinburgh, as we continue to supply high-quality door closer solutions that help assure the safety of students, teaching staff and others, so that they can focus on enjoying everything this world-class university has to offer.”
