ASIS International, the association for security management professionals, is seeking volunteers to serve on the technical committee for the new ANSI/ASIS Active Assailant Standard. This new standard will supplement the organisation’s existing ANSI/ASIS/SHRM Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention (WPVI) Standard published in 2011. Security professionals, legal experts, human resource practitioners, law enforcement personnel, threat/violence assessment/risk managers, and other qualified and related stakeholders are invited to participate.

Incident prevention and preparation

The standard will address incident prevention and preparation—to include security design considerations and protocols—as well as response strategies, and post-incident recovery best practices specific to active assailant events. While the original WPVI standard focused on prevention and intervention, the supplement focuses on issues and considerations specific to an active event.

“Workplace violence is one of the most significant security and personnel safety challenges facing organisations today,” said Gene Ferraro, CPP, PCI, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, chair of the standard technical committee and chief executive, Forensic Pathways, Inc. “This effort seeks to capture current best practices to develop protocols to prepare, respond, and recover from an active assailant incident, regardless of when and where it occurs.”

ASIS International CEO Peter J. O’Neil, CAE, noted, “Our membership ranks span the spectrum of security, the public and private sectors, as well as all industry verticals. This depth of expertise and experience will help ensure the standard provides practical, actionable guidance that will save lives.”

Technical committee formation closes 25 August.
