In recent years a spate of high profile attacks by ever more ruthless criminal gangs in both urban and county areas across Britain, including the £1 million robbery at the UK residence of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, former footballer Mark Fish who was tied-up and threatened by four masked intruders and the fatal stabbing of a leading city financier in his London home, serve to underline the vulnerability of high net worth individuals and their property to criminal attack.

Sadly, many homeowners still rely on measures that are just not effective in dealing with hardened criminals.  The security industry – and installers in particular – should be looking to bridge this gap by moving away from traditional approaches to domestic security.  Solutions including event-driven CCTV – more typically specified for commercial sites – are starting to prove their worth for high value properties, and the number of homeowners using this technology is set to grow dramatically.

I know of several instances where a remotely monitored system at a private home has led directly to the arrest of burglars at the scene and have no doubt about the potential of this technology to make a real difference.

CCTV may not be able to prevent every tragic incident, but being more creative in terms of the solutions we offer to deter and apprehend criminals targeting the homes of high net worth individuals has to be the way forward.
