The Turkish city deployed an innovative solution to improve the organisation and speed of its waste collection.
The Izmit municipality is responsible for solid waste collection across a territory of over 1,000 sq km (400 sq mi) and maintains a fleet of waste collection trucks. As such, the city was actively looking for ways to optimise its waste collection operations:
- How to ensure waste collection on time.
- How to enable real-time tracking.
- How to optimisation routes, fleet, and fuel consumption.
- How to collect usage data and perform inventory control.
- How to share information with the residents.
Collection management system
Xerafy Micro X-II RFID tags were selected for their rugged profile and proven performance in the field
The municipality worked closely with Turkish software provider Mapbis to deploy their ContainX waste collection management system. Xerafy Micro X-II RFID tags were selected for their rugged profile and proven performance in the field, alongside Intermec's IF2 RFID readers.
All waste containers in the field got fitted with Xerafy RFID tags and the trucks received tag readers, so as to be able to send real-time data to ContainX. The system was designed to collect and process a number of critical information:
- Container usage data.
- Fullness and temperature.
- Waste truck routes and creation of alarm
- Real-time notifications to residents.
Optimised collection routes
The deployment allowed for the complete digitisation of the inventory in the field, with all containers tagged and controlled. Data is now made available in real-time, in native digital format.
The creation of new optimised collection routes allowed for a reduction of the fleet of waste trucks and any delay in collections is directly notified to the operation centre. Eventually, the very public the Municipality is serving also benefits from direct access to information, knowing for sure when the next waste collection will take place.
