A Florida county sheriff’s department has four buildings in the district and recently completed a new training centre that will be part of a new six-building complex including a helipad, training centre, garage, forensics lab, tac lab, and on-hand, field experimentation area.
Video security solution
Challenges - With the construction of this new complex, the IT Infrastructure Manager was looking for a complete video security solution for their initial building. With many areas to cover such as parking lot, perimeter, helipad, entrances, outdoor decomposition field and temperature sensitive internal areas, she wanted to ensure they had the right solution provider for a turnkey operation. Plus, she wanted to have a mobile app to be able to see the area remotely.

Solution - The Konica Minolta team, Beth Swain, Major Account Executive and Jason Allen, Manager, had an existing relationship with the sheriff’s dept. through previous hardware purchases. The team introduced the portfolio of Konica Minolta Video Security Solutions and noted that they would be eligible to make their purchase from a cooperative contract.
License plate information
As they learned about the need for video security in this new location, they brought in Adam Sercovich, Video Security Solutions Executive.
Sercovich learned that the IT Infrastructure Manager initially wanted to focus on the exterior of the training building, parking lot and entrances. Using the existing drawings for the new facility, they worked collaboratively on the layout of the cameras and what would be covered – resulting in the placement of four cameras. Since the two MOBOTIX IP cameras had dual lenses, they could monitor both the side parking lot and the entrances more effectively. This also enabled the IT Infrastructure Manager to capture license plate information. The other two MOVE bullet cameras were installed in the back and on the side to cover the perimeter.

They also set up the mobile app so she had visibility from her mobile devices
“I was really surprised at how much area the cameras could cover, especially the ones with the dual lenses. We only needed four cameras. Initially, we thought seven would be needed. Once Konica Minolta was on board, we did the walk-through and looked at the maps - we realised we could eliminate the need for three cameras,” said IT Infrastructure Manager
Further, they installed an on-premise Video Management System (VMS) that would enable the department to scale as the IT Infrastructure Manager adds more cameras. She noted that it was beneficial to the sheriff’s department to know that they could grow into the platform as their needs evolved. They also set up the mobile app so she had visibility from her mobile devices.
Third-party integrator
Outcome - The installation with a third-party integrator and the remote configuration of the cameras by Konica Minolta plus training resulted in a smooth set-up. Now, the IT Infrastructure Manager can focus on a Phase 2 plan. Phase 2 will include cameras for the interior of the building and a thermal camera for the forensics lab to ensure there is no tampering to their experiments.

She is also considering adding camera alerts and license plate recognition capabilities to the exterior cameras. “It was very interesting to see the process. I’m the first to admit our site drawings were not to scale and that made us go back and re-adjust some of the cameras for a tighter angle or switch out a lens to a narrower one. But, the team applied the proper tweaks to get the set-up just as I needed,” said IT Infrastructure Manager.
Six-building complex
The County Sheriff’s office will soon be adding another property and evidence facility in a location different from this six-building complex, and Konica Minolta is participating in that proposal process. Again, the sheriff’s office will be eligible to make their purchase off the OMNIA PARTNERS cooperative contract for speed and ease in the sales process.
This solution applies nationwide, to government offices/facilities that want better oversight of their grounds, buildings & property. With foreign players and open backdoors, the Mobotix camera line made in Germany further ensures product integrity. The story is simple, Konica Minolta can help to provide security via its Mobotix cameras and through its camera apps.
