| Cost effective Alvarion wireless network provides connectivity for monitoring trafic in the city |
The challenge
After consulting Essentia, a value added distributor with expertise in system integration, Molfetta Multiservizi realised that building a wireless broadband network to provide connectivity between the cameras and the control center would be the cheapest, quickest and most cost-effective option.
The solution
To help build the network, Molfetta Multiservizi contacted Alvarion, the largest vendor in the BWA market. The companies soon decided that Alvarion's BreezeNET DS.11 product line operating in the 2.4GHz band would be the most suitable equipment to use.
The result
Alvarion's BreezeNET product family offers point-to-point and point-to-multipoint bridging and backhauling solutions in a variety of unlicensed frequency bands.

In particular, BreezeNET DS.11 with its signal modulation, data encoding, and adaptive power controls could meet the two specific requirements of Molfetta Multiservizi guaranteed security and minimized electromagnetic pollution effects. In addition, DS.11 equipment is very small to reduce visual impact while maintaining maximum technical performance.
Implementation of the Network
By July 2004, the video control system in Molfetta was operational.
Sixteen CCTV cameras located throughout the city are each wire-connected to a DS.11 customer premises equipment (CPE) which are located on top of lampposts and nearby high buildings. These CPEs transmit live images back to a DS.11 base station situated on top of the control center at police headquarters. Data speeds of up to 11 Mbps between the CPE and base station are possible.
The Future
The BWA network has been a complete success and Molfetta Multiservizi is currently discussing how it can be expanded to meet other requirements such as instant management of traffic lights, monitoring of environmental and noise pollution levels, counting and classification of traffic, and for observing traffic violations.

In the last two years, several Italian municipalities have built video surveillance systems over BWA networks. Broadband does not reach most of the small municipalities and mountain communities in Italy and 4,200 of the 8,103 Italian municipalities are looking for ways to overcome the digital divide (Data from the National Union of Mountain Municipalities, Communities and Authorities).
Italy holds great potential for wireless broadband and Alvarion, given its global leadership position, holds the distinct advantage for penetrating this market.
