The flexible XS4 solution can easily grow to meet any ongoing security requirements at The Cavell Centre

Peterborough's new mental health unit, The Cavell Centre, has installed a SALTO XS4 access control system to provide advanced security management. The hospital awarded the contract to local approved SALTO business partner, Turentek Ltd. Located on the grounds of the Edith Cavell Hospital site, which will eventually be called the Edith Cavell Healthcare Campus, The Cavell Centre is part of the £335 million Greater Peterborough Health Investment Plan (GPHIP).

It comprises a state-of-the-art 104-bed mental health unit offering patients purpose-built accommodation with single en-suite bedrooms. Facilities include adult acute psychiatric wards, a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, older people's mental health unit and a specialist service for people with learning disabilities. The accommodation also includes restaurant-style dining facilities for patients, staff and visitors, an information centre, a fitness and recreational centre and landscaped gardens.

"As the only healthcare-tailored access control system, the XS4 solution was ideal for The Cavell Centre," comments Turentek Director Neil Aspinshaw. "Working in consultation with the Centre and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust we designed a highly secure and flexible access control system to meet all needs of the end user, which provides long term care of young adult, elderly and primary care patients."

"The advanced system design incorporates XS4 Scandinavian electronic locks on 104 residential bedrooms, each fitted with Turentek Ovation anti-ligature handles," Aspinshaw continues.

Three reception areas at the unit run SQL server software to control access to all the bedrooms, with individual access for staff and residents controlled via Mifare proximity smart fobs. Visitors to the unit are issued with temporary fobs at reception, allowing strictly zoned and timed access to a specific person/area as necessary.

"With our ability to customise both system hardware and software, the XS4 solution has added considerable flexibility to the design of the security system at The Cavell Centre and given them the keyless access they wanted in the new mental health unit," comments Ramesh Gurdev, UK Sales Manager at SALTO Systems.

"To help operations at the unit run more efficiently all the stand-alone electronic locks are battery operated, the lack of hard wiring needed being particularly important in the installation, and all have emergency key override for staff use as required."

Smart, secure and innovative, the XS4 solution supports unlimited users and is used by hospitals and healthcare providers around the world. Specifically developed for use in stand-alone operations it provides a totally wire-free networked electronic locking solution with a huge range of features.

This means that any future expansion plans can be easily accommodated since it can be easily added to almost any existing lock and door, turning them into fully featured access control doors without compromising comfort, convenience, security or control, ensuring that the flexible XS4 solution can easily grow to meet any ongoing security requirements at The Cavell Centre.
