Right mix of security tools makes shopping malls safer for billions of visitors

Mission

Simon Property Group owns or has an interest in more than 320 malls and shopping centres across North America. As the largest public real estate owner in the U.S., maintaining safe environments for shoppers, leasers and employees is vital to the Simon brand.

To toughen up against theft targeting the retail industry, Simon set out to update security across the board. Knowing that each property was unique, comprising areas as diverse as indoor concourses and expansive exterior parking facilities, Simon understood the need for expert analysis.

Solution

Simon turned to IPC Technologies, Axis partner and specialists in shopping centre security. Together they

assessed risks at each property, and decided to upgrade the existing analogue CCTV system to network video, using Axis video encoders. Additionally, they deployed 100% IP solutions including features such as megapixel and intelligent video analytics with licence plate recognition, well suited for parking areas.

Result

Simon feels it has invested wisely, meeting each property's risks by taking advantage of network video technology. By upgrading existing legacy systems, the company has also been able to save money while enhancing security. IP-based surveillance systems prove indeed ideal in many of Simon's properties because of the flexibility they offer. Network surveillance also enables Simon's security team to better manage video and use it to work with external law enforcement agencies.
