Axis products selected to secure the Campo dei Flora Shopping Centre
The Gavirate Shopping Centre has recently enhanced its innovative wireless video security system using Fluidmesh technology and IP Axis cameras

Fluidmesh Networks and Axis Communications completed a project to expand the video security system at the “Campo dei Fiori” Shopping Centre in Gavirate, in the province of Varese, Italy.

The project started in early 2005, when several wired cameras were installed to monitor some of the spaces inside the shopping centre.  Later, Boston-based Fluidmesh Networks offered its wireless technology to ensure security for the areas outside the building.  In recent months, efforts were focused on migrating the entire legacy analogue system, dating back to the time the centre was built, to a new IP Axis video solution using video-server line products.

The innovative wireless transmitters developed by Fluidmesh Networks offer significant advantages in terms of flexibility and ease of installation.  Each new camera can be easily added to the network, without having to change the configuration of the rest of the system.  Fluidmesh technology helps to optimise real-time video transmission, thanks to its ability to identify the best path to use for the transmission of video data packages.

For the security of the Gavirate Shopping Centre, designers have selected a wide range of Axis products, from video servers to next-generation network cameras.  Axis 241S and 240 Q are the video servers used for IP conversion of the existing analogue cameras, to protect the investment made in the previous installation.  To expand the system, additional shooting and monitoring points have been installed using Axis 210, 210A, 211, 221, and 212 PTZ network cameras.  This wide-ranging product family, intended for professional applications, allowed designers to select the most suitable product of each of the customer’s needs.

"By integrating next-generation Fluidmesh and Axis products, we were able to create a video security system that would have been impossible to achieve using traditional analogue solutions," said Andrea Sorri

The solution is based on innovative features including high-quality images provided by progressive scanning, ability to work in different light conditions, and high capacity of the Axis processor.  In particular, the new-concept pan, tilt and zoom Axis 212 PTZ camera not only provides full panning features, but also enables PTZ control inside images with no moving parts.

“This system is a lot more effective than the one we had previously installed.  For someone like me whose responsibility is to ensure security for the shopping centre’s customers, having real-time high-definition images is a great advantage,” commented Filippo Cordaro, Security Coordinator at “Campo dei Fiori”. “Thanks to this installation we were able to prevent thefts both in our shops and in the customers’ parking lot.  With almost 80 cameras installed, it is safe to say we have reached near-total coverage of the shopping centre.”

“The Gavirate project allowed us to demonstrate once again the reliability of our emerging, innovative wireless technology,” said Umberto Malesci, Fluidmesh Networks President and co-founder.  “A few months ago, the centre’s management decided to renew their initial trust in a wireless solution, so that the shopping center could rely on an innovative, technologically advanced video security solution, such as no other shopping center in Italy can boast.”

“By integrating next-generation Fluidmesh and Axis products, we were able to create a video security system that would have been impossible to achieve using traditional analogue solutions.  We are extremely pleased with the integration with Fluidmesh products, and are confident in strong partnership opportunities in the future,” said Andrea Sorri, Country Manager of Axis Communications Italia.
