The Penang Port offers many services that are well suited toward the growth industries in Penang. It is situated right next door to an international airport, which facilitates trade with Indonesia and Thailand, as part of a triangular economic zone.

The Port helps promote private-sector-led development throughout the region by addressing complementarity issues while also providing opportunities according to different countries’ advantages.

Auxiliary police force

There are six major sites belonging to Penang Port that are required to be monitored 24/7: NBCT, BWCT, PBCT, PW, SPCT, and PS. Initially, the port managed container tracking manually. Every container used to come to the port via road or sea, and the container numbers had to be manually typed into the tracking system. Obviously, there was great potential for human error throughout that process.

There was no surveillance system designed to monitor the entire port from a centralised perspective

Furthermore, there was no surveillance system designed to monitor the entire port from a centralised perspective. All existing cameras were either analogue or IP, and they were standalone. This caused a lot of hassle for the auxiliary police force that managed the port security at the time.

Capturing container numbers

Each site requires a different number of cameras. The Axxon One VMS manages all port-perimeter cameras. However, there are 40 PSIM AUTO Container & Railcar Camera Licenses (AR) added into the whole architecture.

The purpose is to simply capture container numbers at the toll gate and quay crane. Axxon PSIM handles managing and tracking of containers.

The PPSB Operating Command Center (OCC) runs 24/7 in AI monitoring all surveillance images

The container module does exactly what it is supposed to. It detects and captures the container number and stores it in the database for later use by Penang Port. The solution was installed at toll gates and quay cranes. The PPSB Operating Command Center (OCC) runs 24/7 in AI monitoring all surveillance images. It hosts both the Axxon One and PSIM platform for ease of monitoring the entire Penang Port vicinity.

Container tracking solution

The system detects and alerts the operator when something happens based on the AI configuration. The operator does not need to keep track of the hundreds of images coming into the OCC, but instead can let the system alert them to any detected situations for analysis.

Furthermore, the platform is designed with a failover system, which helps to ensure that 24/7 surveillance and container tracking will never be compromised due to the failure of any third-party hardware such as a server. This is the first AxxonSoft port project in Malaysia, notably using a container tracking solution via a surveillance platform.

Managing container tracking

The monitoring system has also allowed for better management of shipping traffic

AxxonSoft ensures integration of the video management and PSIM solution, so port authorities can now monitor all major sites of a maritime facility from one central location. In short, staff are able to see what's going on, no matter where or how it affects them, and they have the information they need to quickly respond to issues, which helps mitigate any adverse impact.

The implementation of Axxon One Intelligent VMS and the Axxon PSIM unified solution has led to a significant drop in accidents, vandalism, and theft. The monitoring system has also allowed for better management of shipping traffic as well as managing container tracking automatically.

Powered with AI video analytics, the monitoring system saves the operator from having to review hundreds of images entering and leaving a container port. It also has failover capabilities, ensuring 24/7 surveillance for their valuable shipments no matter what happens with third-party hardware such as servers!
