As life and business in the 21st century becomes increasingly reliant on being connected to the Internet, the world has seen an increase in products known as the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming available in the shape of smart doorbells, smart locks, lightbulbs and voice assistants like Alexa and Siri.

It is estimated that the number of internet-connected devices across the world now stands in the region of 35 billion with that number predicted to rise to 75 billion by 2025.

SCD accreditation scheme

That is why the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 was enacted into law last December, with the government announcing that companies have a period of a year to implement the changes put forth in the legislation, with compliance required by 29th April 2024. The legislation requires manufacturers, importers and distributors to ensure that minimum-security requirements are met in relation to consumer-connectable products that are available to consumers in the United Kingdom.

Secured by Design has launched a "Secure Connected Device" (SCD) accreditation scheme in consultation with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The scheme highlights products that have achieved the appropriate IoT standards/certifications, to keep UK users safe and help them make better-informed choices when buying such devices.

BSI Enhanced Level IoT Kitemark™

SALTO became the UK Company to attain BSI Enhanced Level IoT Kitemark™ for access control systems

Always ahead of the curve, SALTO Systems is already compliant with the new legislation. SALTO became the UK Company to achieve the BSI Enhanced Level IoT Kitemark™ for access control systems in June 2021. That will be almost three years ahead of the legislation by the time it comes into effect next April!

The Enhanced Level IoT Kitemark demonstrates that a connected product has a higher level of security controls in place than the market standard for its type and is generally suitable for higher value or risk applications. Assessment to this level involves BSI’s most in-depth and exacting testing and analysis.

Enhanced Level IoT Kitemark

SALTO Systems Ltd, Managing Director, Ramesh Gurdev says “Once again SALTO Systems leads while others follow. Early achievement of this increasingly important standard is yet another reason that sets SALTO apart from other manufacturers in the market."

He adds, "Our Enhanced Level IoT Kitemark is a mark of trust for both current and potential customers, demonstrating that SALTO-connected products are safe, secure and fit for purpose throughout their life. Combining this with the Secure Digital Applications Kitemark for our app and web services gives further confidence to customers that we have proven, recognised and accredited security standards in place across our whole eco-system.”
