Consumers are already using cars as a connected device, where the demand for high-performing connectivity for personal digital subscription services is on the rise. IDEMIA, the globally renowned company in identity technologies, has announced new automotive eSIM Consumer offering to answer this demand, giving drivers the ability to choose their preferred network provider for personal onboard digital services.

IDEMIA’s DAKOTA v4.2.1 NG (New Generation) combines Infineon Technologies’ automotive last generation chipset (SLI37) and a 5G-ready Operating System (OS) compliant with the latest GSMA specifications.

Integrated into the car’s telematics unit, DAKOTA v4.2.1 NG allows carmakers to give drivers the ability to choose the network provider and connectivity plan of their choice for onboard Wi-Fi and digital services – just as they are already familiar doing with a smartwatch or any other connected device.

DAKOTA v4.2.1 NG ensures state-of-the-art security, according to the most recent GSMA compliance rules and unrivalled flexibility, allowing car users to enjoy fully personalised in-car infotainment services.

New automotive offering

This new automotive offering complements IDEMIA’s existing eSIM M2M portfolio

This new automotive offering complements IDEMIA’s existing eSIM M2M portfolio, which is trusted by carmakers worldwide and already equipping millions of vehicles. Combined with Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) technology, carmakers can integrate both eSIM products to independently run their own telematics services and enable drivers and passengers to have a dedicated data stream in their vehicle, with their preferred carrier.

Philippe de Oliveira, the Senior Vice President - Automotive Activities at IDEMIA, said “The consumer connectivity market has really evolved over the last decade, as many now consider their vehicle as an extension of their digital lives. Expectation for high quality connectivity and control over their personal digital services is in high demand.

Enhanced on-board personalised user experience

Philippe de Oliveira adds, “We are excited about our latest offer, which addresses this demand and growth of an on-board personalised user experience. We are very proud to be top carmakers’ partner of choice in this automotive connectivity journey.

Benoit Rousseau, the Vice President and Head of IoT Security at Infineon Technologies, said “We offer the best-in-class quality with our SLI product families. SLI37 is truly the next-generation automotive security controller, going a step further in terms of robustness, performance, and quality. Our cooperation with IDEMIA and the GSMA approval show our capabilities in building the trust necessary for the mass uptake of connected car technologies.”

New connectivity experiences

Ian Pannell, the Chief Engineer at GSMA, said “It’s exciting to see the growing range of consumer devices now supported by the GSMA eSIM specifications. With its compliance framework and flexibility, Idemia’s new product will help securely drive transformation in the connected car market, enabling car makers to safely give drivers and their passengers’ new connectivity experiences.
