Regulation on AI is undergoing significant changes globally, with new frameworks emerging to govern its application across various sectors. Over the past year, the European Union's AI Act has been at the forefront, providing comprehensive guidelines aimed at ensuring the responsible use of AI technologies.

This legislation offers clear directives for the deployment of AI in applications like real-time video analysis and facial recognition, which are increasingly being adopted by law enforcement agencies, retailers, and other industries that require robust security solutions.

Assertive approach to AI regulation

In contrast, Australia has taken a more assertive approach to AI regulation, particularly concerning its application in the gambling industry. A new government initiative mandates that gaming venues actively identify and manage individuals who have opted for self-exclusion from gambling activities.

This regulation is not limited to large casinos but extends to smaller venues such as pubs and clubs that feature gaming rooms with poker machines, a common and popular fixture in Australian entertainment.

Facial recognition

A significant responsibility on the venues to effectively identify anyone on the self-exclusion list

The requirement imposes a significant responsibility on these venues to effectively identify anyone on the self-exclusion list and prevent them from participating in gambling activities.

This regulatory shift is being highlighted at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Security Exhibition, which opens in Sydney, Australia (August 21, 2024). The exhibition showcases the latest advancements in security technology, with a particular focus on facial recognition capabilities that meet the stringent demands of these new regulations.

Reliable identification solutions

Sean Borg, Managing Director for Oceania at Corsight AI, discussed the challenges and innovations in the field. He noted, "Facial recognition from security cameras in real-world conditions, such as low light or smoke, is a challenge that very few technology providers can successfully address."

Borg emphasized that Corsight AI’s technology is designed to overcome these hurdles, providing reliable identification even in challenging conditions. This capability is critical for ensuring compliance with the new regulations, particularly in identifying self-excluders in gaming venues, and enables effective identification of club members and banned individuals.
