Tungnan University, established in 1970, is an educational institution dedicated to securing bright futures for all of its students. Given the prosperity of industrial development and the demand for industrial technicians at the time of its founding, the school was originally established as a junior college of technology by Mr. Zhi-Ping Jiang. In 2000 the school was promoted to an institute of technology and finally became Tungnan University in 2005.

Having undergone great growth, Tungnan University is now composed of four school colleges, including thirteen departments and four graduate schools. The University is located on the hillsides of Shenkeng district, New Taipei City, a location provides a pleasant natural environment for students, faculty and staff, but it also creates its own challenges.

Transferring from analogue system

Rapid growth sometimes means growing pains, and Tungnan University, now with 7300 students, had outgrown its old analogue surveillance system. Given that the old system no longer functioned stably and failed to provide clear images, the school decided to find a new solution, one that could protect Tungnan University students in any weather, at any time.

Keeping track, and ensuring the safety, of staff and students in an expanded campus will always present a challenge for security systems. However, as the campus was built into the hillside, and lightening occasionally caused power outages, as well damaged school facilities and equipment, the new system didn’t just need to be smart, it needed to be tough. In addition, the large area covered by the campus meant that any system needed the ability to cover many spaces though one intuitive control system.

Tungnan management had decided that an independent campus security centre would be established, in order to take charge of the security of the whole school, and guarantee the safety of over 7300 students. Tungnan University got in touch with the experts at Apogear distributers, who looked at the list of requirements and set to work planning the perfect system.

Total coverage and total protection

Apogear knew that there was only one surveillance solution provider able to not just meet, but exceed Tungnan University’s expectations - VIVOTEK. Together, Tungnan University, Apogear and VIVOTEK set about planning a system that would watch over and protect the university’s students. Given the broad expanses of Tungnan University’s campus, 135 network cameras were installed across a variety of spaces to ensure total coverage and total protection. For outdoor spaces and underground parking lots, 66 IP8364-C bullet network cameras provided night and day, all weather surveillance.

Equipped with a 2MP sensor enabling viewing resolution of 1920x1080 at a smooth 30 fps, the IP8364-C is an all-in-one outdoor camera capable of capturing high quality and high resolution video up to 2 Megapixels. In order to adapt to the constantly changing outdoor lighting conditions of Tungnan University’s hillside location, the IP8364-C features a removable IR-cut filter as well as IR illuminators effective up to 20M for superior image quality around the clock. And for protection against the harsh mountain weather, the camera is encased in an IP66-rated housing and weather-proof casing to withstand rain and dust.

Day and night security

For tops of buildings, corridors, and stairways, Apogear and VIVOTEK recruited the IP8362 bullet network camera for its 2MP resolution, WDR, Focus Assist, and built tough IP67 rated housing. The IP8362 is a best-in-class 1080p outdoor bullet network camera designed for diverse outdoor applications. With full HD resolution and WDR enhancement, users can identify image details in extremely bright as well as dark environments. Now Tungnan University’s changeable weather would no longer challenge the University’s surveillance system – not matter how bright, or how dim, students could feel safe anywhere on campus.

A further 20 IP8332-C bullet network cameras provided day and night protection of corridors and stairs with their built in IR illuminators effective up to 15 meters, and removable IR cut filter for day and night function. Finally, rounding out this great class of VIVOTEK cameras, 6 FD8134 fixed dome network cameras provided 350-degree pan range and 70 degree range coverage of elevators. The FD8134 supports the industry-standard H.264 compression technology, drastically reducing file sizes and conserving valuable network bandwidth, meaning savings on storage and allowing more money to be spent on the education of Tungnan’s talented students.

Safest Possible Educational Environment

Finally, tying the entire system together are 9 ND8401 network video recorders. United by VAST, VIVOTEK’s state of the art video management software, these network video recorders are 16-CH network video recorders designed for sophisticated recording applications. Each unit is equipped with an Intel Dual-core Atom Processor with maximum recording throughput at a robust 96 Mbps. RAID 0/1/5/10 is supported with four HDDs, with an external eSATA port for additional expansion.

Further, with VAST integrating all 9 network recorders and all 135 IP network cameras, Tungnan University security staff are able to use free, and intuitive functions to watch over the students via a video wall solution, VAST Matrix, which allows for the live viewing of hundreds of cameras. Now, as it has been doing since 1970, Tungnan University can concentrate on providing its young students with the brightest possible future, secure in the knowledge that VIVOTEK is ensuring the safest possible educational environment.
