With crime against empty properties on the rise, public authorities aim to minimise the amount of time a council house stands vacant. However, multiple workers require access to prepare for every new tenant. Passing keys securely between all the relevant staff members is a major cause of delay. At Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), the flexible mechatronic locking system CLIQ® helped streamline these workflows, upgrading security and saving money at the same time.
Speeding up key handover
RMBC identified physical key handover as a major bottleneck in their property workflow. They needed a solution to speed up the process and at the same time, upgrade security at empty properties and use limited council budgets more effectively. They installed CLIQ® Remote system which can be managed over the network and offers remote updates of key access rights anytime and anywhere.
It’s quick and easy to fit a programmable CLIQ® cylinder. The high-security cylinders need no wiring or expensive electrical work to power them. A standard lithium battery inside every programmable CLIQ® key powers the secure microelectronics inside the lock. So the user brings power to the door.
Remote capabilities
Now, each relevant RMBC staff member carries their own programmable CLIQ® key. Using CLIQ® Web Manager software, security managers issue the precise permissions that every staff member needs at any one time. With CLIQ® Remote, the access rights of any key can be amended or revoked at any time using programming devices —and from anywhere with a web connection.

Physical handover of mechanical keys and the time and money spent coordinating that process has been eliminated.
Even a lost key doesn’t compromise security. It can be instantly blocked with a few clicks of a mouse, saving more resources wasted on replacing cylinders. It’s also easy to issue contractors with keys that work for a limited time-period set by RMBC—say, over a weekend for a maintenance job.
Reduced delays & increased control
“We wanted to make sure people that needed access to our properties could do so as quickly as possible,” says Dave Richmond, Director of Housing, Asset Management and Neighbourhoods at Rotherham Council. “A traditional key approach only added to delays.
“The CLIQ® system sped up our operations and made sure we could be confident about the security of our properties. The CLIQ® Remote solution has enabled us to have more control over our keys.”
